Sinead, I think I must say this. Why do you keep deleting your posts? Every single thing you post is modified later and these below have been deleted. About 6 months ago, we on this forum experienced very similar behaviour from someone called Masters2008, who has since then deleted every single post of their's after complaining of acute depression, being advised by the entire forum to see a counsellor, and then deleting their posts.

It annoyed many of us for a substantial period fo time,. for we wasted time anad energy in replying to posts that were deleted!

Sorry I'm a bit late reading this, but that's excellent news, Bug!! You've worked SO hard since you started that you really deserve this result! That feedback is amazingly good, hope you're really pleased with yourself and take a well earned break now. It's so nice that you got the other news about your fieldwork in the same day too. It bodes *rather* well for the future, I'd imagine, and you don't have to be Mystic Meg to think that!

Thanks Rubyw :-) What a lovely note! I'm writing a paper now, to present at Amsterdam 1st july. But it's with sup, so not tooooo worried :-) I had a little bad news about some other funding just after the lovely upgrade day, but anyway, moving on!!

Upgrade viva

Hi check my upgrade ballons thread, i replied to your q there....

Thanks much, it hasn't been that smooth for some others this year and it could have been bad for me too, so I'm just thankful!

Smoobles, we have our supervisors in the viva, usually as mute spectators, sometimes backing up the student, but mine actually questioned me!!

Do not worry, (I was petrified), all they want to see is a person confidnet enought o be totally engaged with what they are doing, yet flexible enough to be open to suggestions. Hopefully it will be more of an intellectual conversation rather than an interrogation.

But if it is the latter, try to stay calm and wait for it to end without saying anything you will regret later. And do not try to revise anymore!

UPDATE UPDATE

I'm devastated. I've just found out that the girl has been with a new boyfriend --not from the US-- for over one year now. What happened to all what she told me about commitment and stuff? What about the previous boyfriend who was working hard and saving for the house back in the US? Now I can say that she came to Oxford looking for a new bf and I just happened to cross her path. Was I wrong to reveal my feelings back then? What a load of rubbish.

No but Jwhatever, do continue, for if you don't what else shall we poor, 'God'forsaken (pun intended) PhDers ever do for some free entertainment?

LMAO!

Last on to post on this thread wins

Thanks E !!

Hi PhDBug - has this topic upset you before, when people mention it? I'm sorry if this topic is personal to you. If its an upsetting topic to you, I didnt mean to offend

why are you upset? what is making you fumed by this? and why is it personal to you? why do you express anger? (Ive seen you express anger in other posts by others - you might need to talk to someone)

I was replying to the other user about presentations

It's funny that you edited your orignal comment to insert this crap above!

Hmm, agressive, upset and I "might need to talk to someone"??

Isn't that what this whole forum has been telling YOU for the last few days??

Anger is not something I am prone to, but I must give you a salute dear Sinead, you've managed to (with this crap above) to irritate me a little now!

Cheers!

Thanks all.

Received my first real disappointing news yesterday. A major schol didn't work out, after I made it through all the rounds and the last 70 of 600 or something. I had a great interview too...

Even with the work, and other schols, it's not enough. 13,000 quid tuition every year plus rent plus bills.

Anyway, now's the moment to tell myself I win some, I lose some, and I get tougher :-)

Onwards!!

A friend studying here was saying to me recently he had a problem with that

I agree just different types of examiners.

The presentation is an interesting one - not recorded. I did a presentation - and I was told - a couple of times - by some Phd students that it was one of the best papers they'd heard out of everyone, and that nobody gave a paper like it, yet I got a C and other people got an A.

The focus of my topic was a different field than the field of the examiners, and people who got an A, where in the same field as some of the examiners. Probably different kinds of marking for each field. I dunno I guess can't do much about it - so will forget about it

Sinead, what in this situation made you think about 'internal politics'? To me it could (and probably is) a case of 'grading'. This will sound harsh, but I saythis from experience, peers are not always the right evaluators. Not that profs are. There is no set rule.

But just that I do not see why you would necessarily reach the conclusion of internal politics based on a C and the fact that peers said it was good. Why would they want to harass or play games against a masters tsudent? It happen,s if there have been specific reasons, and they will publicly display this (unlikely) by giving C to a star paper, that's a REALLY strong thing to happen.

Is it the real case, though? Who was playing politics? AGainst whom? I truly cannot see it... Enlighten us??

Driving myself absolutely mad - waiting for undergraduate results
P

Ahh... welcome to academia!

Waiting for undergrad results... waiting for MSc exam grades.... waiting for PhD offers....waiting for funding...waiitng for your first confeerence acceptance....waiting for your journal paper to be peer reviewed...waiting for your committe to read you work...

waiting, with bated breath, to get a job offer!

It's all the name of the game, you see. You'll learn soon. It's frustrating, and demanding to make it through all the waiting, and as my sup tells me, you win some, and you lose some, just see that you do your best...

Natassia, I work very broadly speaking with young people in the UK, and their use of social networking sites. My work invovles a comprative analysis of 10 European social networks, and interviews and user-made fancy drawings etc with teens and young people in London. :-)

(That is NOT how I phrased it in my upgrade doc by the way, but that's also a way of putting it!!)
