Me or LM weren't talking of a pregnant woman's getting support haha!

You said more men support women than vice versa and me and Lim both found it relevant to define 'support' a bit before making such a remark.

Clearly, a solely financial definition of support is at the root of all this, and BHC you are not alone. Some of my very well intending male relatives and friends, even ones who are studying and researching social issues, have these ideas.

BHC, what is "support" ?

BHC,

First, isms are not always to be found in "actions" if actions are defined as something physically or materially being done. Prejudices are attitudes expressed verbally, subtly, epidermally. The politics of all isms reside usually beneath the skin of visible actions, discrimination, sadly, often being 'absent' on paper and in 'action' (though not always so) but omnipresent in peoples' standpoints, positions and thoughts. You expressed a thought that pregnancy was a way out of the pressures of having to provide for, and/or having the comfort of someone else support you. That IS an attitude which speaks of gender prejudice. It does not mean you are "doing" something that is against women, or even "feeling" that way, but this comment, as three women on this thread (and probably more) have agreed, without any mutual collaborations or exchanges, does indeed smack of a prejudiced attitude.

Pregnancy is a mutually arrived at decision between two people, not the free choice exercised by one person (although yes, that is sadly true of many countries where sexism is "visibly", "materially" physically inscribed in direct gender bias, gender torture and so forth). Getting pregnant is not an option selected by a woman that exists as one of the ways in which to get supported for by someone else. When two people decide it is time for a baby, they usually divide roles of duty amongst themselves, sharing out the burdens for something that will bring happiness to both. So, if one person must go through the difficulties of physical fatigue, labour and often a profession with it, the other partner walks hand in hand. Like all other mutual, collaborative decisions within a family, there is a division of labour, things being well. So, pregnancy is not an option/way out chosen/selected by a woman.

Finally, nobody got "pissy". If the comment was not problematic, three separate people, all presumably intelligent researchers, who deal with complex academic problems and other issues, would not have reacted in the ways in which they did.

Do you believe in a 'God'?
P

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

Quote From Kubaff:

Yes I do believe in God. Look around yourself, do you honestly think everything you see in nature came from some random reactions or some other bollocks like Big Bang Theory? I dont think so, it appears to me everything exists by intelligent design who I believe is God. I also dont think the assumption that PhD students are more intelligent than all other people is misplaced. I know a good number of smart people (than me) who are not PhDers or even interested in post graduate studies. Read Big Bang Theory Exploded by the Standish Brothers. I cant remember their names

Mercifully, when you die you'll cease to exist and you'll never be disappointed that there is no God - in my very modest and feeble opinion. And if there is a God (no chance), I want a fxxkin word with him! He's a backseat, lazy freeloader who needs to pull his finger out and start mediating. Having said that, I would feel sorry for him. People from time immemorial have been blowing themselves up and fighting like school children over him, and it's all his fault. He must feel terrible! No offence intended to religious people. :-)

I am agnostic. That's besides the point. But this post above is unnecessarily harsh, IMO.

"I really wish I could take the "get pregnant and let my partner sort it out" option, but as I am a man this is unlikely." That smacks of sexism!

Completely agree. Not that it is new, and I have seen similar comments in SO many cultures. My first reaction on reading this was to have my mouth fall open, for I thought men perhaps don't SAY things like this out loud, but I am guessing I was wrong..

Somehow I dont think your A levels matter much for a PhD application...i would push for a more research intentions focused piece, albeit with background about what interests you etc...but this is a PhD, even if you are applying straight from grads, I dont see much logic in writing about A levels...

Bug!!! really, I thought better of you than to rely on wiki for proof, everyone nows how unreliable it is. My findings on Kedgeree are garnered from years of field research and primary accounts!!

Thanks for the CV tip Katie21, will defo give it a go.

Ahh Eska....my post was meant as a joke...also read the sentence before I quote from Wiki...my own PhD is about collaborative learning etc, particularly where people's reading and writing practices around things such as Wikis are concerned, the public attitude towards wikis, and pop culture and so forth have been sites of heated debate in our field....

so, in all, that's why my comment before the quote...and no, I do not use Wiki for references...my point was different but am too sick of writing about such things for my PhD to write more here...

Are your A levels really relevant for a PhD app...are u coming straight from undergrad..If for personal reasons etc you eed to mention A levels fine...but if for solely academic purposes...perhaps focus on things more recent than high school?

Overseas conferences - when to use available funding (AHRC)
P

On a related note, how many conference papers do people uually get to give during a phD (exclusing sphd symposiums of course)

...

I am getting the feeling that this is a vague question, soemthing I almost never ask :-(

Should I submit?
P

Dhara,

I am 5 months into a PhD and am looking at a 2.6 yrs submission to graduate in 3 yrs. My supervisor is on board with this. But I should tell you, I almost do *nothing* except my CV, research jobs and my thesis. I write a HUGE lot, my sup reads a HUGE lot, I run very fast, so does my sup. Without that a PhD standard work cannot be achieved, even with that, things may still be doubtful.

As I look at this, unless your thesis is of a SOUND standard you should not submit. and doing sound work in 2.6 yrs time needs a HUGE HUGE amount of effort, please believe me, I am going through it, and it's awfully strenuous. SO you will know best whether you have done that kind of thing. If you have, trust your sup and go ahead. If you have come straight from bachelors and have written something that looks okayish, i woud say hold on.

All I know is, I did masters, I do almost nothing except research and thesis, and I stick to a calendar like a leech. It's unimginably tough to do something really good in such a short period of time. I would agree with all people here that considering you came from a BA and considering your sups slightly doubtful comments, give it time .

Do you believe in a 'God'?

Ok, seriously, I don't get you. Why did you do this poll? How many people at all voted? Is this for a study? (if it is, you should have made that clear) Secondly, what makes you think people here are 'scientists'? And..i really dont know what to write...i find this whole exercise you went through a lil pointless.

Annoyed, but do I have a point?
P

Doodles, that may well be the case for many, but I don't think it can be said to be a generalisable complaint though...completely reverse situations are also visible, and they aren't really too few to count..

ahh the james guy who wanted us to believe that buying essays off internet shelves was the same as writing one yourself or having intellectual conversations about one with teachers/peers?

Hmmm...yeah he was the best!
