PhD Dissertation in only 12 to 18 months !

Neither do I have any coursework to do, and have plunged into research. But it is still going to be a minimum of 3 years. thats why it's a PhD. So, I am not quite getting what "phd by research" means...

But the publications need work to go in before they happen, so even if the thesis is each chapter as an article, I don't see how the whole thing can be done in 12-18 monhts..

Also, suprisingly the moderators seemed to agree that the content was "irrelevant"!! So, indeed, maybe I was right!

Aboslutely squiggles, agree completely.

My point was not in response to OP, but to the post below mine, which has smething about cocaine addicts etc...it is this one that made no sense to me, and still doesnt. OP and discussions following it are just fine :)

Ok, Sharsoonidhi, your post makes little (if any) sense to me. This is a "post graduate forum" where "post graduates" or would-be post graduates come to discuss their Masters/Phd experiences, like admissions, applications, writing, finishing, etc etc.

Workshop paper

I guess you are talking of Phd symposiums. They usually need a 15 min presentation and while they are a gr8 way to get to meet peers from diverse disciplines, and get *some* feedback, they are not the equivalent of open conferences and/or one to one meetings with scholars, and these are usually rather rushed and not intellectually satisfying..

A one page paper...uhmm...how long is this supposed to be? Since you are first yr maybe you could just focus on ONE aspect of your research...just a central theoretical question and then fan out into theory from there...or focus on methodology...I would say it is a good idea to keep 1/3 dedicated to your topic, a holistic idea of what (you think) you are doing, and then focus 2.3 on any one aspect of the project...

MPhil to PhD
P

In the UK, it is more often than not a case of registering for an Mphil, and then upgrading. EVERYONE has to upgrade. So, that's nothing new actually...

(exceptions may be there, but the norm is this I suppose)

There are some who so not have a masters when they enter, (science people I think). If you are arts social science, be prepared for a lot of catching up to do. About science, I really dont know.

good luck

quick note here, good luck indeed. don't worry, all of us have these things under different names...and if you were perfect after 4 months of a PhD it would be WORRYING lol! so, go and BE imperfect and stress free

LSE MSC management

Is it 2 years? I dont think so....

Anyway, you could write in to the departmental administrator, they are usually very helpful. Alternatively they put you in touch with recent grads. The programme is very new as you know and so is the department. GO on to facebook, do a search and see if you can message 2008 grad. That will be the most helpful.

Sorry couldnt help more,

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about your sup, though when you started did you have an intellectual exchange with them to see if your ideas click or not, and generally whether they are ready to proceed WITH you rather than against you? Also, if disciplines and field sdo not match at all, it may be a bit difficult to be on the same page always.

No, sups are not always like that, there are all kinds of sups (as there are all kinds of students!) Mine is a god-send! I guess the option is to either change sups (which is a tough thing to do, but many do do it) or seek advice from your programme director. Also what doo their other students say about their style?

Good luck and hope the issue is solved quickly!
