Crisis of Confidence

Amanda ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((huge hugs)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

You are not going to do well. You are not going to do very well.

You are going to ROCK THEIR SOCKS OFF.

I mean it, you are dedicated, committed, have a great record of academic excellence and I can make out over the months, totally passionate about your field and topic. See, you are committed enough for me to remember that:

1. You are a student of history, who has to access databases and census stuff
2. who has discovered flaws in old research
3. who has convinced a god supervisor of the novelty of her project
4. Who has been reading very well.
5. Who has already done a pilot thats proved some people wrong.

NOW GO GET THEM.

Urrrgh got to go out now, its cold, and one more term has started and I want to get under the quilts like a rug bug.

Good luck to all for productive and fun days ahead(up):p

Guys I feel so happy to read these responses! I was so depressed today trying to make my way through the blasted financial applications. Its such a horrid waste of time, trying to package your research for people who know next to nothing (which is good practice i admit) and then working out nitty gritties of what money under what slot and then,....for all you know nothing may come of it..and all i have in hand is a backache from stooping at the damn laptop, and bleary eyes!

Gosh, dont i sound like a very very bitter bug...bad signs so early in the year !!

Thanks you guys! Feelin better after reading your replies :)

Did anyone here kinda waste the break?

I suddenly got a project (good pay, good intellectual work) that took away 6 clean days, and I read over 125 articles and wrote 8000 words for it, and thats done.

But thats not my PHD work :(, and I also completed 2 financial aid applications.

And completed getting adverts and equipments in place for my end Jan early Feb fieldwork.

And put together a 4000 word piece for a publication, thats due for submission in early Jan. But thats from stuff I wrote earlier, so no new material!

But apart from that I have ZILCH to show. I have not read for my Phd, and I have done nothing else. i have written nothing, read nothing. spent all the time on cooking, travelling, entertaining friends, celebrating my Bday in xmas week, and chatting with family...

GOSH i feel so guilty...and drained out with nothing :-s

Worried that I am working too slowly!
P

Hi,

U say you are producing 1000 a day. Are you sure all of it is good material (potentially usable?) Because or else, I would tone it down, and check if I am writing good stuff. Of course free writing is a strategy for some, and writing never hurts unless theres something seriously wrong with it

Also, Christmas week is supposed to be hectic and technically when you leave al of that out, the Xmas vacation isnt really one of the longest vacations. So, in all, aiming for an overdrive over Summer is one thing, but over xmas, i dont know.

I dont know what you mean by some kind of argument, in my opinion arguments emerge once u r ahead in the work, or at least have done a lit review. In the sciences u need some hypothesis i guess, even in social sciences at times. Do you have a research question thats not too broad, thats crisp and precise enough to let you do a it review without driving yourself crazy?

If youve done that you ve done a good bit :)

Have you tried editing the citation itself? Go to the name field and Type Author comma Initial. Then press enter and insert the next author comma initial and so on.

Change the output style to Author-date.

Styles can also be edited.

DOING A SECOND MASTERS - PROBLEM
P

======= Date Modified 04 Jan 2009 09:35:53 =======
One concern that shot to my mind is that the forms ask you to list all graduate institutions you have attended and send in all transcripts from degree courses. That, plus the fact that you must guarantee with your signature that you have been honest with the form, later failing which your status in the univ as a regd student may be jeopardized. And i think it may be a bit too much of a risk to take.

Just my two pence.

On hindsight i see that you are applying for a masters, not a Phd. well then i dont know how important your masters grade would be in any case, for my second masters my grades hadnt even been declared for the second of the two years, and it was from a diff country, but i entered my second masters pretty ok.

You do know though, I am sure that forum content is archivable and searchable on google, so you may want to keep all of that in mind. Otherwise I guess you can go ahead.

New Year Resolutions
P

1. Lead a sane life that's doesnt get hyper at little things going wrong
2. Write, write, write like a machine.
3. Reach the landmarks set to be reached by Dec 09.
4. Meditate.
5. Do yoga thrice a week.
6. Look after self: eating, health, exercise, water.
7. Dont beat yourself up when none of these things happen, after January or possibly even earlier.

FINALLY,

Be prepared for anything: any news, any eventuality, any wonders, any miracles, any highs any lows.

Application Questions
P

God I cant even remember what I had written in answer...
well, they wouldnt 'officially' have any way to find out, nor would anyone have the time or reason to find out, unless they had special reasons.

if a candidates really good, univs will want to keep the person and hence make an offer, if they can, and then names of other schools wouldnt make much of a difference.

This is highly open to perception actually!

I have no teaching experience but still wants that lecturer job

Ok now i am a lil confused....does that mean NON uk folk trained in the UK HE ORDER are problematic too?

Cos I am one of these, and people say I am pretty good (pat on the back!)...and am worried that my UK peers and friends might think I am not right?
