You scored mainly in the Fire-Earth quadrant. This 'red' quadrant highlights the 'fire' sign of your personality and your tendency to act in the heat of the moment, dealing with practical 'down-to-earth' matters which concern you. You tend to be an action-oriented person who can't wait to get involved and sort things out. It is not for you to sit on the side lines of life reacting to circumstances. You are more likely to jump in and influence the way things are going. You are a player on the field of life rather than a spectator.
People who map into this quadrant like to find solutions to problems and implement them as quickly as possible. You may sometimes become impatient with people who can't make up their minds or who want to analyze things to death. Taking action is much more preferable to you, even if your solution is not 100% correct and may need to be modified.
You are likely to be a person who will deal with conflict issues in a direct and positive way. If necessary you will give your opinion, even though others may not agree with you.. This openness and forthright characteristic is in general an advantage as people will usually know where you stand on any issue. However there may be times when being tactful, rather than 'open' could be a better strategy for you.
Hi nnenna,
usually universities provide detailed guidelines, in the form of handbooks, verbal or written instructions on such things. All schools I've attended have done that. Maybe you should check up with your school/department intranet and/or classmates, teachers dept admins etc.
On another note, this forum can go out of its way to help people out, REALLY, trust me, when people feel low, out of sync, have interpersnal or academic issues, the number of people who'll rally around with detailed postings is just unimaginable. That said, its a fair deal to bring up issues which arent this easily solved (for e,g with ones own hard work, or a little finding out here and there)...
cheers!(up)
Technically it may be physically possible to write 100000 words in 3 months. I absolutely stand by the fact that it is impossible to do "creative, original, indepth intellectual work" in 1 year. Because if it is, we all are lazybones out here to say the least! 8-).
A phd by publication is another issue altogether, a centennial professor I know did it in 4 months.

Depends. At my school, you need a full length detailed proposal covering a review of literature, method, timeline etc. This is reviewed by the thesis committee following which there is an hour long viva. The committe then decides to either pass it or fail it, or as is more likely ask you to re submit. Very few clear it without any modifications at all. Though this varied from school to school. I come from a school and a department which places high importance on this review as well as the Upgrade review which is said to be a mock PhD viva process.
best.
Hi, this is a bit late since you first posted your question but anyway...I left home at 19, have studied away from my city, country and continent, and today 4 years later am starting my PhD. I am an only child and despite my love for my parents and family, they have loved me enough to let me go away, and I find it quite easy to follow my dreams. My subject is such that its not an academic discipline in my country and I know that I shall probably never return. There are many who settle abroad, but most dont say it clearly from the start, or dont know it. I know it, my family does and thats it.
So, you see, these are issues that differ so much even across a forum thread, you can imagine what happens in the whole of the world. My question to you is different. In your post it was Australia that was the main thing. But a person who wants to do a PhD will need to have some particular academic-related motivations. Whats your passionate area of interest? Who are the people you think would be great for u to follow these interests? Which departments do you find the most suited for all this? That should lead you to your destination, not the other way round. Of course, if there are post-marital family commitments then other things in geography get a priority.
Your case seems similar to mine. I came to the UK because here was the place where I could work with the greatest intelectual resonance with the best supervisor, doing my DPhil at a fantastic seat of learning not just in the UK but in the world, not because I love the UK (which I definitely do). Funding is another concern. But leaving all of these things aside, putting a place you find perfect as the sole criterion to decide where you want to do your D.Phil (which is a huge academic commitment)....I find that a bit intriguing...If in your entire post you werent talking of a D.Phil but a taught masters or a diploma, I wouldnt even have raised these questions.
A DPhil is an intellectual commitment, a commitment of time, energy and money for academic/professional/strategic reasons. Make the choice with care. Love for a particular geography/culture can be one of the factors but definitely not the sole important one, and perhaps not important enough to plunge you into confusion.
i guess you, like me are very early into your twenties and dont have marital ccommitments...hence I thought the POV may ring well...
Best
Applied to 7. None with the one really good sup i wanted to work with as she wasnt taking newbies ths yr. 2 in the UK, for which I needed detailed proposal. 5 in US which just needed an SOP and an idea of fit with the dpet (Cos in US u dnt start all this til after coursework)...
but ultimately was offered supervision by that one really good sup, without submitting a proposal!!
So, LOL, it differes...in my case I never ask myself this question "u stupid idiot why did u waste all that time and energy applying to 7 places when u could have approached the one you wanted to work with staright away instead of staying happy with the decision that she wasnt taking new people anymore!" but asking myself that makes me feel really stupid, so i dont..
surprising but one page on the UCL website actually says it should have an odd number of chapters, between 5 to 9..
http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/C.Clack/phd.html
just googled for these terms "odd number chapters thesis phd" and this page came as a hit...
Hi All
Am just starting but from what we hear around the department, (and this is actually VERBALLY said/spelt out) they "don't like to see faces lingering around for more than 3/4 years, because it makes everyone uncomfortable".
havent a clue what they mean by 'uncomfortable' and why, but this was spelt out v v clearly. so i guess, its the same everywhere. the faster you finish the happier your sups/dept is, what i wonder is WHY it is so?
