I had a similar though slightly different experience. Submitted a paper, one reviewer tore it apart, went on a complete rant about all sorts of stuff (totally unjustified- just a real bee in his bonnet)- The editor emailed me  and said 'we (the journal) don't agree with reviewers x's comments, son essentially ignore them'....It got published!

It was before my PhD though so doesn't 'count':-(

On a better note- had a paper (review/commentary) accepted last week- editor emailed me and said 'thanks for choosing our journal, best wishes with your research!) :-)

do you mean you've worked solidly for 7 weeks or you're are 7 weeks into your PhD? I need to frequently get away fro my PhD. I'm full time, end of first year, and need head space to analyse and conceptualise- so don't stress. Its a marathon not a....

I wouldnt eat it, but would think its fine to use on your hair;-)

I agree with others- Enjoy christmas. I read the book 'how to get a PhD'. Helped prepare me for what might be involved. PM and I cad send it to you.

Thanks all for the replies- really useful to hear the experiences of others. It seems like its a choice depending on finances, circumstances, ethics and personal preferences and ability....

I'm not sure what to do. As was mentioned, I will try and have a few transcribed proefssioally and see how I 'feel' and how engaged with the data I can become. Plus I will see if I really do get on with other tasks such as analysis.

I could think of a million things I could happily fritter the money on (Ipad, holiday, Credit card bills, chrissy presents), but have not other expenses re. PhD, and this is my major expense. Costs of conferences will be covered by my other sponsors (I've sold my soul- my employers are my sponsors- thus have to work for them for ever once finished:-(

Hello all. In a bit of a dilemma's.

I am conducting semi structured interviews, and having transcribe them verbatim. They last an hour each, and take me about 8-10 hours to fully transcribe. I have transcribed 3 (plus 3 'pilot interviews' to practice technique, coding, etc). While I can see the benefit of transcribing (data immersion, seeing important concepts), I'm pretty slow, my back hurts and I get rather fed up!

I have just been 'given' 1500 quid by a sponsor which would pay for 24 interviews transcribed by a pro (this would cover the cost of most my interviews)...I will still listen over to the recordings over and over, read and re-read the transcripts (once typed), but not have the painful task of actually transcribing. I'm not looking for an easy way out, but just want to be as efficient as I can be

Also, I could get on with reading, analysing previous interviews whilst some little Christmas elves are transcribing....

i.e if money/cost was no option would you get your interviews /FG's transcribed professionally, or is it 'always' better to do it yourself?

BTW I am using grounded theory, and will aim to conduct 25-30 interviews...before my transfer in July 2011(sprout)

Not sure if it helps, but unfunded (1st year, FT) and don't pay council tax....I think that as long as your registered at a FT student at your uni you're exempt.

Hi Fm. I have just had a paper accepted this week for publication, and am in the process of reviewing an article for a different journal. I think after having papers reviewed yourself, and also you reviewing papers as part of your own research- it'll come 'naturally'.

I looked at the paper with critical (not cynical) eyes, and looked at the arguments made, was it strong enough, well referenced, was the method clearly described so I could follow the research again etc etc..

I always start off my comments with...' this was an interesting paper on x, and i agree with the authors that more research is required in this area, however......'

I give comments on the paper itself (track changes), then convert to pdf (as if still in word they might be able to ID you). Then i give a summary of my comments on a separate sheet (Pdf)...

It's good experience, and hopefully one day they'll ask us to be on the editorial board

Hi all, I have found a very relevant study I could include in my lit review, however it was an unpublished masters dissertation. I only knew it existed because the author sent it to me (there's no record of it online or anywhere).

Can I still use this in my lit review? If I do use it how much attention can I give it? How credible is it, seeing as it hasn't gone through peer review?

I don't mind leaving it out, but it would be quite useful as there is little to no published work in my area.(robin)

So leave in or out???
