I guess working on my thesis on a Saturday night has one advantage - I get to win this game!

When I print it, it looks like someone has dropped blood on the page instead of like a thumbs up. Bugger.

That works fine for me too. Sorry, Mr Smartypants. Hope it prints okay.

Ah. Tried that and it doesn't work. It comes out as a reverse image of white thumb with red background. What now, Mr Smartypants?

You say that like I should know it already

What happens here (Australia) is we submit spiral-bound copies of the thesis which get sent to the markers. Then, assuming we pass, we have to make the corrections they recommend, reprint the thesis and hard-cover bind that version for submission to the University library etc.

I thought when it came to the hard-cover versions (assuming I pass) I would just slip in a page with a little red thumb up on it right at the very end after the reference list and appendices. No one will notice and by the time they do, it will be hard-bound and it is too late anyway. My sup is pretty laid back - doubt he would mind, especially if I said it was something special to me. The only thing is, I don't know how to get the onto paper. Maybe 404 can help little luddite me?

So quiet on here today, so I thought I would just jump in and say...I'm winning.

part-time Ph.D in Law and working full time as solicitor
P

Although I was not on this forum when you were posting before, welcome back Keith!

Glad to hear you have made the right decision for yourself. Just wanted to let you know I have a friend who worked for 5 years as a solicitor after finishing uni, but disliked it so much she quit and worked in a sunglasses shop of all places. A little over two years ago she went back to uni to do a full time PhD in law and has loved it.

Now she is approaching the end of her PhD and has just accepted a lecturing job at a uni in a different city and has decided to start that while finishing her PhD "after hours". She is confident she can cope with both - she only has 8 months to go and has already made good progress with her thesis. I guess if you are organised and dedicated, it is possible to combine a PhD in law and work at least for some of the time. Good luck.

I was thinking of just putting the little red symbol on the acknowledgement page. Tops chaps!

Supervisor hall of fame - what's the worst thing yours has done/said?
P

My supervisor has the worst memory on record. He cannot remember at lunchtime what we discussed at morning tea. In his defence, he knows how bad he is and tries to write down everything we discuss about my work. Other bad thing is he can be abrupt and impatient because he is always so busy.

Other bad thing was he through me in his swimming pool at our lab Christmas party one year. Spent the rest of the day with wet undies on...Eewww. For that he has never been forgiven.
