Living cost of a PhD student

How about a holiday to Australia, Coastman?

how long can it take?!?!
P

I am green with envy.

We have water shortages where I live, so the days of long, hot showers are long gone. I feel guilty showering for more than 5 minutes. I turn the water off while I put shampoo and conditioner in my hair (turn it on to rinse in between obviously) and I shower with a bucket between my feet to catch some water which I then put on the garden. I catch the washing machine rinse water in a bucket to put on the garden too. My car is filthy because I am not allowed to wash it.

I am contemplating a holiday to Europe so I can have a long shower!

When to submit papers (Computer Science PhD)
P

My supervisor started talking publications before I had even decided whether to accept the project/scholarship!

I think they mention it really early so you know how important it is and so you start your work with the goal of publishing the results in mind.

It feels great when your paper is accepted and it feels great the day it is available online. Go for it!

PhD full time or mixed with teaching?

I thought Oxbridge was some university in the UK I had never heard of. But then the amount you lot talk about it, I figured it had to be pretty important...and then I clicked!

I guessed Imperial must have been a university or a school, but the only Imperial I know is a pub!

Okay. Now I know I am going to seem really thick...but was is Imperial, if you all went there? A school? A gym? A bar? A shopping centre?

What is the longest feasable time that you can take to do the Lit Rev?
P

That is not to say we ignore any new work published after we start. I have to discuss any new work in relation to my work in the final discussion of my thesis. Fortunatley for me, the new work is minimal. My work and I are an island.

I am great, thanks Coastman. Busy writing. Have to start a new job on Feb 12th, so hope to submit by then. We have a long weekend this weekend for Australia Day and my bf and I are going away for a few days, so I am super happy at the moment! Thanks for asking. How are you? Hope you were not among the looters on the beaches of England I saw on the news.

My supervisor says the lit review is a snapshot of your field at the time you start your research, so should be finished as close to the beginning of your project and not updated at all.

PhD full time or mixed with teaching?

But what does the term refer to in this context - why are Coastman, H and Adem gimperials?

Okay, it took me a while but I finally worked out that Oxbridge is just a combination of Cambridge and Oxford. Now can someone please explain to me what a gimperial is? Confusled.

I have a very painful mouse-click injury.

Thanks everyone. Ah, tiger balm. It is a little jar of miracles, isn't it? Pleased to report it is much better this morning.

So much better I went hot air ballooning!

Anyone NOT using any referencing software whatsoever??
P

Zelda, I was in a similar situation. I am a bit of a luddite and couldn't be bothered learning how to use Endnote. Then I had to write a review article for publication and had no choice but to use Endnote to write it. I had a pile of about 400 articles that had to be entered, so I just took a couple of days off from other PhD work and entered them all in. Once you set it up, it is easy to use it each time you get a new reference you want to keep....but the sooner you start, the better. Do it today!!!

A day of formatting figures for my thesis and I have injured my back. Every time I click the mouse button now, I get sharp pain in the middle of my back near my shoulder blade.

I can't believe I am even writing this post - that is an extra 8 mouse clicks...ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch!

I'm in love ...

If you have never had sex, how can you know it is yuck?

Question about Endnote
P

I am using Endnote 6 too. I always make the bib list in one hit after I have finished my entire document. To do this, I just click the 'Format Bibliography' shortcut in the Endnote toolbar in Word (looks like a small list of 1,2,3). To get rid of the list again, I click the 'Unformat Citations' shortcut in the toolbar (looks like an arrow looping out of some square brackets. This converts all the in-text references back to (Smith, 2004 #236) format and the bib list itself disappears. Does clicking the 'Unformat Citations' get you what you want? Is that what you are trying to do SixK?

Attention those with MSc distinctions...
