These sorts of battles are probably best left to those directly affected by them otherwise we'd never get any work done for worrying about it. I know plenty of people from all sorts of minority groups and for the most part they find making the sort of change you are suggesting, to be highly patronising at best and completely counter-productive at worst. What matters is intention and deeds.

It's pretty clear that no disrespect is intended by the original poster and in my opinion the issue should be left at that.

I really wanted to partcipate, but 1. Why do you have only the option of male/female?

I wouldn't normally get involved in a discussion like this but I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a binary choice. What would you like to have seen there?

How long should I wait for a PhD interview result?
P

Quote From hbh:
eng77, Thank you for reply, and I agree that I should have been more patient and should not have shown myself as a hasty person. anyway I just got a reply today as "I I’m still waiting for input from the central office, I will contact you as soon as I hear anything." But he could have provided some more details like they are doing this and that ...., waiting is difficult anyway ...

You can ease the pressure on yourself by taking control here and applying elsewhere. I wouldn't sit waiting on just one position being offered.
I certainly wouldn't feel bad about sending that second email. That is not impatience, it is you recognising you have a value and that you are pro-active about protecting your worth. He should be lucky to have you. You should try not to think of it as the other way round. It's a mentality thing and it takes a bit of practice. It's a very good way of standing out from the other applicants though and showing a bit of independence and backbone is a good thing.

When are you really ready to start your PhD?
P

Quote From ellabella1993:
My supervisor has asked me when I’ll be ready to start my PhD. I’m not sure what he even means. I assumed you had to strictly start when the academic year begins. Can I just say I’m ready to start now and just start? Do you usually have a kick start to your PhD workshop or do you get thrown in? I don’t want to sound silly by saying “when CAN I start?’

You shouldn't feel stupid asking for clarification. Ask your supervisor what he means. You're going to have to learn to communicate with him about all sorts of stuff over the next few years. Take the opportunity to get over feelings of being daft because you'll have a hard time of it later if you don't learn how to do it now.

If your supervisor is a decent person he won't have a problem with this type of question. He'll probably expect it at this stage.

PhD viva failure. Re-submission and viva.
P

If you are having suicidal thoughts you must seek urgent medical help.
Nothing else is more important.
That is too serious a situation for me to want to begin talking about how you cope with another viva. That is a minor thing in the scheme of things.
Please make a call to someone tonight if possible and really right now if you can.
Once you get that sorted out there are plenty of people here who can help you with advice about second vivas.

Troubles with organization and supervisor
P

Did you ask anyone?
Do you now have a lab and a workspace?

Troubles with organization and supervisor
P

I know this isn't a pleasant phase to go through at the start but those conrete plans you talk about are solely your responsibility.
In addition to the excellent suggestions by rewt and ToL, I'd add that if you need to use any instrumentation or techniques you should find online tutorials and get yourself up to speed during this stage. Find other people who can take you through any physical instrumentation as well if you can find them. You want to pay particular attention to any safety concerns.

How much did you get drilled on knowledge of techniques you used during your viva?
P

They can pick anything from what you have written about and grill you until you can't provide further answers.
I was absolutely grilled on a couple of theoretical sections and it was very challenging but I got through it. My examiner was keen to firstly identify the limit of my knowledge and then drill through beyond that to see how I thought through unfamiliar problems. It was a pretty brutal session.

Sigh!

Is it necessary to send research proposal to the prospective supervisors?
P

It means she is happy to help you out on an informal basis without having to assume responsibility for you.

Tax status as a funded PhD student
P

As a registered student you are exempt from council tax regardless of work you do on the side.
If you are receiving a stipend for your PhD, that will be tax free and you dont need to declare to anyone.
Your job title, if you need one, is student.
You will have to pay National Insurance on your earnings from payroll work but the uni will sort that out for you. Depending on your tax code you may also be paying tax but in April time you will get that refunded to you by HMRC.

Accessing journal articles
P

Quote From rewt:
My library unofficially recommends the service. The journals can trace it to the university but they are not responsible for internet use.

That is not the same thing as saying that accessing that site is consequence free for either the uni or the student. It's just worth bearing in mind that there is a risk here. To be honest I'm not sure I would trust a librarian member of staff who is speaking with any authority on copyright and legal issues which cross international boundaries.

Accessing journal articles
P

ToL, my fear would be that the universities could be identified by the journal and that could potentially cause subsequent issues for the university such as restriction of legitimate access to the journals. Elsevier is valued at £35 billion. No company that big is going to sit back and allow their asset to be freely accessed.
Under pressure, the university could easily determine which of their users were accessing these services. That might lead to a threat to your job.
It depends on how much risk you want to take and how realistic those risks are. I am a hge advocate of Sci-Hub but it's only fair to warn people of potential risks of using "illegal services" within your university.
I use it at home regularly but would not access it when at uni premises.

Turning a chapter into the whole thesis (whilst half-way through PhD?)
P

Ah OK. That makes me feel slightly less inadequate :-D

PhD proposal, more theoretical depth
P

Quote From S81:
Hi

I have submitted a PhD proposal, and the university said it should be more theoretical depth and provide substantive challenge.and it has lack of a strong theoretical base.

My research proposal mainly depends on qualitive method ^interviews^

Please advise how I overcome these points, I don’t understand it clearly

I would try and find some examples online of successful PhD proposals or ask the university directly. That should help you identify the problem.
