I can totally relate.

Had a postgrad induction all afternoon today and met a couple of starters aswell.
I guess everybody is just scared right now and has a lot of respect of the whole thing and doesn't know how everything works and turn out.

So I guess this is just totally normal and we'll soon think different about our PhDs :)

Don't worry guys. We'll surely get through this :)

Actually started reading a book in preparation for the PhD and they also mentioned not to focus too much on the research, but take care of yourself, go out, have hobbies, meet people...

Yes, I'll be in London that's why it's the 15k.
At the moment I have to enrol online and there they asked for payment details, too. So I'll know how to sort that out. Just need an account now.

Also find it interesting that people are payed so differently. How is it having the money for 3 months already? I guess it is easy spending too much in the first month already ending up with barely enough before the next payment?

Preparing for my move to the UK and the start of the PhD and have some questions:

1. As many others I'm funded by a research council. This years rate is some 15000 GBP. Does that mean I will get a twelfth of that onto my bank account or all of it or less than a twelfth, but a higher paycheck for holidays and christmas?

2. Looking into bank accounts atm. Seems like the system is a bit more complicating than in my home country. Would any of you guys here (or somebody in the same situation as me, but who has read more than me) be able to recommend a bank and a account?

I can totally relate.
I'm about to start my PhD. Spent the last 6 months abroad for my Master thesis, so I'm basically finished and left my University City 6 months ago.
I really miss my BSc and MSc years already. Had a great flat, a broad range of friends I could rely on and I had time to exercise and read up on stuff I was interested on besides University stuff.
Already learned during my Master project now that time is scarce and there is not much time besides work, as you have to do some other stuff (literature research etc.) at home, as you don't have time during work hours....

I actually kinda fear the next 4 years. I don't want to be isolated and wake up after 4 years and realise I haven't seen any of my PhD country and haven't made new friends...

I can relate to you concerning the "not properly asking for help" issue. I'm like that sometimes in the lab...
And the supervisor then thinks you understood everything etc., but you actually don't and then this goes on and on and finally it's too late to ask, otherwise you would look sooo stupid.
That's one resolution I have for my coming PhD. Ask everything from the beginning and if it is stupid sounding. Only that way my sup will know what I actually understood :)

I was introduced to Mendeley some time ago by a friend and a lot of people on here use it aswell! It's free, easy to use and very good. You can give it a shot and have a look and maybe compare it with refworks for a while. I had used EndNote for my BSc thesis and Mendeley now for my MSc thesis and definitely prefer mendeley ;)

She is just having the interview right now via Skype. Watching and listening in on it. :)

I your case I would prepare a ~10min presentation on your project.

And your layout seems pretty good.
A layout does anyway always rely on the audience, I think. The people your presenting to won't know the topic, so you have to introduce the topic first, then adress the hypothesis and finally go into the results and sum up the whole thing.

But I hope you find out how long it should be.
