Thanks Lughna and Dalmation. I love the Jimmy cliff song!

PhD completion time
P

+1 to PsychBrainiac.

Also 'completion' is a loose word and it depends on when you think completed is.  I didnt really think about it until I started my 3rd year but completion can refer to many steps. Is it when you submit? Finished your Viva? Finished your corrections after your viva?  Or when you are awarded your degree?

Thanks Dalmation and Dunni73.  Big weight off the shoulders indeed. It feels strange not to have the Thesis in the back of my mind.  I will enjoy it while it lasts...:p

Thanks Pixie, rest indeed, for 3 days then I start teaching job.

Larrydavid, a part of me wants to say define what you mean by"xxxx" and what sample do you draw those conclusions from? But most of all, I just want to say:

Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)...

Proofread a thesis
P

Thanks for reply Ian,

Sorry for getting back slow but I have been proof reading for two days straight. Also most there, only 60 pages to go. I take your point about proof reading. My research does tend to make sense according to my supervisors but just has words missing or a word too many. I am going to try and get my thesis back to them and see if they notice a difference in the typos...

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to try reading it out loud. I had thought about getting a friend to do it. But I really need to learn how to proof read my own work for the future. Also, my family live in the other side of the world and are not computer literate....

Cheers, I will report how it goes.

Research topic: Marketing-Psychology ?
P

I am currently doing a PhD which includes psychology and finance.  My work is based around ideas from Tversky and Kahneman. I think there are endless opportunities in this field.  Most of the research from the Heuristics and Bias field comes from experimental research. So a good PhD idea might be the application of it to real world scenarios (such as marketing).  Just because a controlled experiment shows something, it doesn't mean that people act that way in the real world. Have a look at Gigerenzer's research or even the research of Gary Klein.

A word of warning about doing a PhD which covers two disciplines. Its hard work and difficult to find a supervisor and examiner who believes in the same approach as you.  Good luck.

Proofread a thesis
P

Hi All,

I have completed the second draft of my thesis!  My supervisors said that the thesis is good, but needs a really good proof read. I cannot afford a professional proof reader so I have to do it by myself.  My problem is that I am not good at proof reading! When I read, I often insert words which are not there and change the order of words in my head.  I don't just do this to my own work, but to everything I read. hmmmm.... So my questions are:

Does anyone have any tips on how to proof read accurately?

I have been told to read out loud and also to read backwards (1 sentence at a time). Has any tried these tips?

Approaching professor about a post-doc
P

Thanks for the replies. That gives me a better idea about how to approach professors when asking about possible post doc positions. I dont know the professors personally, and dont have any connections to them. I had been thinking about future research interests and found an article written by these professors which was very similar to my own idea. Thus, the interest in a post doc.

mhk, did you find your post doc by 'creating' the position or responding to an advertisment?

Elsie, the funding aspect would be a good avenue to pursue. Thanks for the tip. I will look into how funding works in HK and USA.

Approaching professor about a post-doc

Thanks Mhk. I am currently in the UK and the two people I am thinking of contacting are in Hong Kong and USA. Its hard to meet them face to face. However, not impossible over the next 6 months. Should I post them a letter of intro and a resume?

Approaching professor about a post-doc
P

Hi All,

I am currently a PhD student, in my final year and close to submitting (touch wood).  My mind has started to turn to working afterwards and I am really interested one idea. The concept is relatively new in my area research but I have searched the literature and found two people researching the same thing.  I would like to do a post doc in this area and was wondering how I go about it.

Do you just approach a professor and ask for possible post doc positions? i.e. send an email and ask them straight up?  Or do you have to wait until you see a position advertised?

Cheers,

To do a PhD or not
P

======= Date Modified 21 Feb 2012 12:48:08 =======
Hi Mohammeduk,

One option which hasnt been brought up yet (I dont think), is PhD via publication. I think it is quite common in IT as getting a whole thesis on one topic is not always possible. PhD via publication means that you publish some research and when you have enough, you can write a thesis which ties it the publications together. It might be a way of finding out what the PhD is like without making a full 3+ year commitment. Also, your supervisor may be keen, as they always like to get published!

Just a thought,
