check if you have access to digimap through your institution http://edina.ac.uk/digimap/
if you do then you can legally use OS maps downloaded from this website provided you put the copyright statement in, which will be included as a text file when you download the map. you can get all kinds of OS maps at different scales so if you have access you should be able to find wht you need

Hi Hcark, I totally understand, I'm having the same problems with a group of my friends. we always used to meet up 4-6 times a year but now i'm in my final year I have kept telling them I can't but they keep pressuring me to meet up and then I end up feeling guilty and going which I can't afford in time or money. (this usually involves a 16 hour round journey for me!)
I think they're probably just trying to do what they think is best and help us not get stressed by doing fun things aswell but unfortunatley we know that we can't do that, and that if only they would understand that pressure and in a few more months we can be back to normal!

Hope you manage to get it sorted and that they understand - like others have said if they're real friends they'll still be there once its all over so try not to worry too much about it, hard as that is - I understand you don't want to risk losing them.

Pink numbers - I just finished my first draft of methodology on Friday too, so treated myself with a weekend off which was great, I agree with you a day off can really help and now I'm feeling re-energised for this week! I'm also not sure what I'm writing next, but I think lit review may be the best idea.

A friend and I have started have writing sessions twice a week, where we go to a coffee shop, turn off WiFi and just write... its working amazingly well! I find I can zone out of everything else and be really productive for those few hours.. and it gives me more enthusiasm for writing the rest of the week once I've made a good start on something without any other distractions.

I'm simultaneously fighting with SPSS and Excel for my data analysis, so Patience I sympathise!

Tusco -I'm the same, no pushy supervisors so I just let my own deadlines slip and slip...
Patience - seems like we're at a simliar stage - and I think I am underplaying how tough writing will be as well - in my head all along i've been thinking when I get to that stage it will be OK, and now its finally looming I'm wondering if I was wrong!

I "should" be finishing this summer too, but am getting a little scared reading this as I seem way behind... still have some more data collection to do, and analysis... have some written in very draft format so I still think I can do it, or at least have a full final draft before my funding runs out!

I can't believe I'm in third year either - its so scary! I feel like I've advanced about 6 months, not even thought about writing yet and still heaps of data collection to do, where does all the time go?!

just wondering if anyone else has been called for jury service while doing their phd?
I'm not sure what to do, from the info they've sent it doesn't look like I can apply for exemption. They'll only pay you if your employer signs to say you won't be paid for the duration, so unless I stop my funding and "defer" for two weeks then I'll just lose 2 weeks of work at a really busy and stressful time, but if I do defer funding then don't actually sit on the jury I'll be out of pocket for 2 weeks.....
so just wondering if anybody else has done it and how you dealt with it financially and work-wise...?
I would quite like to do the jury service, its just a really bad time!!!
