Can I borrow your significant brain powers for a minute
R

Hi Walminski,

with all respect, that sound really complicated what you have written down.

I have worked as follows:

One chapter addressing:

1. Explained what methodology was chosen and for what reason
2. Based on the methodology which data collection method and data analysis method were chosen and for what reason.

I think your project is more complex as mine, yet even so, I would suggest to try and keep it simple, especially if the issues are complicated and hard to grasp.:-)

Referencing personal communications
R

Hi Walminski,

agree with the above.

I would write something like: ......Based on discusssion with ....../ key author / expert etc. we decided to use to use a three phase study.

Hi Sue,

thanks for you reply.

I agree that for the reader it may be useful to have that information. However where do you stop? I have all kind of checklists etc.
I will ask my supervisor specifically.:-)

Dear all "6 monthers",

related to the final part of the process: I am trying to complete my thesis, have most the chapters more or less completed. Just a bit in doubt regarding what to attach as appendices.

Would documents like moderation scheme, topic guides, coding trees etc. need to be attached? Or would this be over the top? I mean I do not want to turn it into an extremely long bookwork. No guidance on this on the university website.

What would you think ?

Sue,

good idea with the small steps. I am doing that in the same way.

Especially regarding referencing, it is a lot of "nitty gritty" type of stuff. I quickly make mistakes in those sort of issues, therefore for me is best to work on it in short spells, then put it away, review etc. If one comes back to it regularly, before you know you have achieved a great deal.(up)

I will review some of my referencing today, as such you are not the only one!:-)

Hi Sue,

same for me, hope to complete everything this year, ideally before Summer.

As such you have done about 90% of the whole process, now a matter of completing the last tiny bit! Yes, we can!(up)

Silly question on "Word" headers

Thanks Bilbo,

that is helpful.

I have tried it, and it seems to work.

Silly question on "Word" headers
R

Dear all,

I am trying to put my thesis together. I would like a different header above each chapter.

However, I only know how to put the same one for the whole document.

Does anyone know how to make that each chapter has its own header?

Hi Walminski,

thank you for your very open posting, providing an insight in what you are feeling at the moment. I am sorry to hear that things do not seem to go as well as you would have liked. Must be difficult, especially as you are not sleeping very well, and this may make it more difficult to cope with everyday PhD and other stresses.

I do not have any specific tips to give, although your resolution to keep in contact with friends, and in that way to maintain your social network, seems a good one to me.

Obviously I wish you, despite your reservations, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

What shall I do if no-one answers my on-line questionnaire?!
R

Hi Mog,

must be frustrating. However, I think it is not unusual that response rates for these kind of surveys is low, for which there are all kind of reasons: Overflow of requests for potential participants, questionnaire too long? Perhaps not appealing enough? Not knowing the person who does the research? Other priorities of potential participants (exams, X-mas presents)? etc. etc.

As such it may be useful to ask a few fellow students to fill in your questionnaire and ask for their honest opinion. Also, as mentioned before, if you would have access to key players, who can promote the survey, this would be a great help. Finally, think about the timing of the survey; I think December and January are probably not the best months to do something like this.:-)

Party thread for Viva Passers!
R

Well done Olivia, very good performance, perfect achievement!!

Congratulations, also to the others who have passed.

How long did the whole PhD process take you?

Have a great party!(up)

So I passed my viva...
R

Good show, DanB!:-)

Please provide some feedback regarding the viva, type of questions etc.

Bad attitudes towards qualitative research...
R

Hi Keenbean,

as you know the method used should depend on the research question. As such both methods have its place. However, I think people often have preferences, which may be based on their experience, skills and probably also prejudices. As such your lecturer in statistics may like numbers and may find it hard to deal with the openness and wideness of qualitative methods. I admit that is a bit strange though, that she is teaching qualitative research techniques as well!

How is your neck, foot etc.?

A broken foot and a lot of frustration...
R

Hi Keenbeen,

sorry to hear about your accident. However, as you indicate, perhaps you have been lucky, that nothing more has happened.

Regarding your foot, depends on time, healing process and type of fracture, but there is a special type of "shoe", which one can use to walk with. This "shoe" is still quite large in size, but would make you more mobile. Unfortunately one is not allowed to drive with it.

Ask the surgeon when you see him / her next (up)

I am soooo excited!!!!!!!

Well done, Emmaki!

Good news for you. Nice to read such a positive message!:-)
