Hi harsh,

not sure that I understand your last sentence?

HOW MANY QUALITIATIVE INTERVIEWS....
R

Hi Whenever, doc08,

also think that saturation is the key. Would think that you have enough information, I plan to do a lot less interviews (however focus groups).

Doc08, thanks for your entry referring to the literature, that is actual helpful information for me as well

Hi Harsh,

welcome to the forum.

I am not from Germany, yet do live there. As far as I understand it especially Humboldt university and the ones in Munich (Munchen) are very good. Give it try by looking at their websites. Do you speak German? That would be useful.

What research did you do for your MD?

Kind regards

Hi Tsipat,

thanks for your advice. This is useful and down to earth.

So you managed with a recorder only? So no picture and sound OK? I am impressed.

Help! Will it feel like this throughout my whole PhD?!?!
R

Hi Scifi,

I agree with all remarks above. Also you are only 9 weeks into your research project and at that stage it is normal that you do not know everything about your subject. Even stronger you probably get more and more confused! Keep on reading and summarise what you have learned, gradually you will notice that areas come back again and again and you will realise who the key authors are etc.

So persevere, you will get more confident with time ...

Try sports,

best a game like squash, where you really have to do more than you feel you can do, you should really feel exhausted and forget everything. Then a hot bath and a good night sleep and you will be refreshed!

The whole process, between first submission and publication, took about 5 months. Had to revise 3 times in that episode, once regarding the content, then that was accepted, then twice regarding issues like the presentation and format (e.g. tables etc.). Contacting the (assistant) of the editor was very helpful. Also to stay actively in contact with the journal and making sure you do exactly what the instructions are is important as the process is very prescriptive, a lot is done via the computer software and it just does not work if you do not fill it in properly.

Hi Shani

yes I think I can still use the information.

I had it videoed with an external mic, then connect the video with the television for analysis. The picture helps in knowing who is talking. Unfortunately some people just do not talk very loud or murmur something. Also sometimes more then one person talks. This makes it difficult to understand. May be I should ask each participant to indicate when they want to speak ,then hand them the microphone, then speak. Obviously one would loose spontaneous reactions. What do do think?

Hi typha,

that is interesting. Is the grammar not very important in spanish? Having a good base seems crucial, although obviously you did do a 2 months course. Did you feel that was enough?

How is the weather in Spain at the moment?(or is that a cliche)

I wondered whether you could help me. Posted a question few months ago regarding recording in focus groups. MichelleV advised high quality Omnidirectional Microphone (which costs about 130 pounds).

I bought a mic (on the box it said Quality and Omnidirectional, and it was only 40 euros)and have done the first focusgroup but, as with a cheap mic was to be expected, the quality of the sound was not brilliant.

I wondered whether MichelleV or others who have experience in this field (?Tsipat, Shani) could quote a specific name / brand /subtype) of a good microphone for a focus group? MicheleV would you share which mic you used? That would be very helpful.

Thank you

Rick

Dear all,

I wanted to share that I have just managed to publish my first paper in a peer reviewed journal. Although the subject is only marginally related to my main subject area, it still feels great and I feel very happy. It also helps in getting to know how the application process / journal software work.

So if I can do it anyone can do it, seems mainly a matter of not giving up!

anyone else struggling to start qualitative analysis?

Hi Zelda,

I am going to do focus groups and as such not touched the analysing bit yet. Understand that it is quite hard. Have you got specific software?
