Must write paper by end of today
R

Driveninsanity,

try a "Good is good enough" approach. Take same time to set the headings, then just write like what you want, do not bother regarding conventions, the flow wil come! Then connect the headings via "connecting phrases" (" the question regarding XXX" will be addressed under the next heading etc.)

Then ask someone to read, be open for suggestions.

Then correct and send! (I know this is very simplified, but you can try it)

Good luck

Hmm,

interesting, so you are trying to solve the Pascal conumdrum whether body and mind are part of the same thing or two separate entities?

Hi Pinkneuron,

do you need to know about MRI as magnetic resonance imaging? If so what does the f stand for? (as you see from my question that my knowledge is limited!)

Hi Pinkneuron,

try and relax, they are probably just pleasant people with whom you can discuss your research. I have been through something similar recently and actually felt it was a very constructive conversation. It may help to make a list of issues which you want to discuss as otherwise you may forget to ask these. The other way round you will have read a lot around your topic and will know a lot about this already. Bring forward what you know!

undestanding organisational culture during qualitative research
R

epzds,

wow, that is a very open question! Organisational culture is notoriously difficult to grasp and as such not easy to define. "The way we do things down here" is a quote that comes to mind. There is a lot written regarding organisational culture, for example Handy, Kennedy, Mintzberg and Senge ("learning organisation") to name a few. I think you best approach is to read articles from these and then make your own list. Be aware that most people are not aware of the organisational culture so you will probably have to work with scenarios: What would you do if confronted with...

Chasing up article submissions

Hi orian,

I think that the process often takes several months. It depends though on the field. I have spoken to the editor of the British Medical Journal at a conference who assured me that they would let me know in two weeks time that the paper was rejected! (I am not sure whether that was a good sign

Hi verdy,

what kind of an accent have you got?

Using voice recognition software

Hi AcademicMum and verdy,

thanks for your replies, this is interesting and indeed could save an awful lot of work and potentially resources. I am still in the process of setting up my research and these things could make life a lot easier.

Using voice recognition software
R

Hi AcademicMum and verdy,

I was reading this thread and was interested in whether this software can recognise different voices? This would be useful for example doing focus group work.

Also are there versions in different languages? For example in German?

Creating good research questions
R

Hi usedbrain,

Your research question is the key issue as this will set the whole of the dissertation. Thus it is something to think carefully about and it is important to see the subject from different angles. Asking others for their views is also helpful.

Your research question will set your method. E.g. if would ask a very explicit question like "Which elements are useful" you probably will use a quantitive method like a survey. If you want to know "Why" these elements are useful, you will need to use qualitative techniques.

You can also look at this the other way round: Which methods can I use, are feasable and valid, this will have an impact on how to pose the research question.

Good luck

how to plan a project?!
R

Hi Laura,

like UFO is saying you should first orientate yourself by reading a lot about the subject. As such you will not be able to plan what exactly you are going to do as you will first need to know the subject. Setting a explicit project without having gone through this phase is virtually impossible.
The difficulty mayb e that you have to choose a project early on without knowing enough about it. It would be important to have an interest in the area and to make it "broad" so that after the literature review you can make it more explicit.

do I carry on?

Well done Joyce,

good that you have sent the revised proposal. Everything goes in small steps and there may be corrections yet this is all part of the game!

PhD in Germany or U.S.?? DILEMMA
R

Hi Koska,

the Humboldt university is well known in Germany and has a very good reputation in Germany. I think it is classed amongst the better universities in the country.

Berlin, although a big city is less expensive that cities like London, Paris, Rome. On the other hand 900 euros is not a lot of money so will have to be creative. Taking into account you field of study you will be familiar regarding how use your money!

Opinions on using figures from other people's papers in a thesis (please)
R

Hi Sue,

I think you should try and get permission from the author if you want to use the original. Alternatively you could creat a picture yourself and then mention that it is based on the original and reference that. Saying that I think the gold standard would be to get in contact with the author first.

making a conference poster in powerpoint - help!
R

Hi Chrisrolinski,

I am not sure I understand the issue. I think you can make your picture say A5 on Powerpoint and this can be enlarged to A0 by the printers. In fact I think you can make the poster also in another programme and as long as the proportions are right it can be enlarged by the printers to poster level.

I think it may work better the other way round: write on a flipover chart the text and draw / put pictures on it, if you are happy with this then condense it into a smaller proportion.
I think in general it is better to put less info on a poster than trying to fill it up completely
