Dear Sixkitten,

did not think about that; obviously a fair point and agree that MSc is an achievement

Post-nominal letters - what to do when you have a PhD?
R

Hi,

I agree with the above, once you have your PhD there is no real point in writing MSc.
If you have a title is an underlated field like an MBA obviously you can still use it.

I think in most medical publications you get something like: name, MD, PhD

The City of Birmingham

I agree that the university is great and especially the medical primary care centre is is very good. Als impressed by how helpful people were.
City a lot better than Southampton..

Also went to Southampton and agree: although the postgraduate medical teaching was great the town it self is not very exiting. Only few shopping streets, quay and a cinema...

Ah,

did not realise that.

I am afraid do not know a lot about the opportunities in the UK, although in general find everything extremely expensive down there.

Would Salamanca not be a better place to study Spanish literature?
There you might also be able to earn money teaching English

PhD and pregnancy- advise needed
R

Hi Esther,

apart from the already mentioned issues (no age limit for your partner regarding fatherhood, you being 30 (abitrary lower risk of pregnancy related complications below 35) and the risk of hazardous substances from the lab) there may be the view of the employer: It may be that you are not allowed to work with dangerous substances while pregnant.

Probably best to wait a year

Thanks for your replies, this helpful and appreciated

May be I have not been explicit enough: the quality of the care which the doctors provide is not based on explicit cases but on systems which they have in place to assure that optimal treatment is provided.

I am not aware that such wide concept comparisons are made in qualitative medical studies.

subject of PhD thesis
R

Dear Ronja,

see your point, I am struggling with the same issue. Although my supervisor made a suggestion I am not sure whether that is feasable yet find it difficult to set a specific research question myself.

I do not think that you would not be capable to do a phd based on that, it seems that a lot of people struggle with the same problem.

comparison in qualitative research

Hi,

just a quick question: My supervisor has advised me to do a qualitative study comparing views of british doctors and german doctors regarding the care they provide.
Does anyone know if one can compare in a qualitative study? The concept seems strange to me as due to the small groups there seems a very high likelyhood of selection bias.

Any views?

how to get into a 4 year programme?
R

Hi,

I am currently not doing an PhD, yet have ben in contact with people like clinical directors etc, who advise regarding what programme to do. My experience is that it better to be specific and explain exactly what you want. My view is that it is better to be to the point then to be vaque. This would also prevent problems later on during the programme.
