Good luck with your proof reading Lara, and Armendaf with where ever you're up to today.... I am learning from your experience, so your pain is not in vain. ooh, what a crap poet I'd make hehe.

I'm off to bed now, I'm turning into a hunchback with RSI and pink piggy eyes, so time to stop. Can't believe I said earlier I didn't have much left to do on this one, hahah how very naive - I'll NEVER say that again! There's always more to do, isn't there! Ugh. Ah well tomorrow will be a long day in that case, so see you then. Goodnight :-)

Robgreenacre, do think you're being a bit hasty? 5 weeks isn't very long. A masters can't be exactly the same as an undergraduate course, particularly in the same institution, as all curricula and course outlines have to be externally validated and meet specific academic requirements for the appropriate level for that course.

You might get the same actual books on your reading list, if they're central to a specific topic, but you should be capable of producing a far greater depth of analysis in your written work with your newly refined critical skills at masters level. I put the same books on my undergrad's reading lists that I'm using in my PhD research, but we use that information differently because of where we're at analytically. Can't you speak to the course director about how unchallenging you find the content and see what they suggest?

Hello there!!

Lara, it's great that your brother's so accommodating, phew!!! It buys you a bit more time - it all counts doesn't it!

btw I'm very impressed by your good spirits, you and Armendaf! You'd never guess the pressure you're both under - (up)

Hope you're making good progress anyway.

I worked till too late last night and it went really well for some bizarre reason (!!!) so I've just been s-l-o-w-l-y typing up all the amendments in word. I could do it a bit quicker but seem intent on creeping along today, all a bit contrary really, but there you go. I think it's because I know there isn't actually *huge* amounts to do now, after chipping away at both of the chapters recently (whhhooooppppeeee) but I should save my whoops till they're sent off in case I'm tempting fate or some such superstition. Apparently there is a new moon tomorrow and it's a good time to wrap old things up and for new beginnings, so you both have the heavens on your side, if you believe in unscientific stuff like that. Personally any help from anywhere, heavenly or otherwise, is nice at the moment for me :-)

Good luck both of you for the rest of the evening's work - see you later maybe? I'm having dinner now but will be back (up)

Is it unrealistic for someone of a working class background to become a lecturer ?

I just need to relax and have more faith in my ability!

You should really. There are lots of things that might affect people's chances in life as well as class, depending on what they want to do, like gender, race, being disabled etc etc but it depends on the individual as well. If you start looking around then you'll probably realise that things aren't set in stone and we don't live in a medieval serfdom anymore. Good luck!

Olivia, have you ever wondered why pirates have become this romanticised, nomad of the seas Johnny Depp/Captain Pugwash/Jolly Roger thing? I vaguely remember from doing criminology that they were robbers who stole from others at sea, lived off what they plundered and thought nothing of using excessive violence to get what they wanted. I wondered whether it's the idea of freedom and living outside of society's rules that makes them appealing today, albeit in a selective memory way. Like highwaymen, or Bonnie and Clyde. Or maybe even some similarities to modern urban ASBO kids with guns that joyride and indulge in more unpleasant illegal activities. I don't really want to burst your pirate fantasy bubble, but I do find it interesting.

btw maybe I should add that I wasn't criticising your own personal pirate obsession at all - each to his own, as they say... I just find the widespread romanticisation of some types of criminality quite curious.
