which supervisors advice do I take
R

It would be a better idea if they could agree between themselves on the best way for you approach something as fundamental as this, so everyone involved knows what plan of work you are following. It could get complicated if you frequently find yourself having to choose which supervisor's advice to follow, especially if it's conflicting. After all, you're the student and they're the supervisors, so you shouldn't be in a position of having to make that choice.

I have two supervisors from different disciplines, so both have different ideas about methodology, although both are excellent in their respective fields. We agree my plan of work at joint meetings so we all know exactly what I'm doing, and I copy both supervisors into emails when I've got questions relating to methodology so everyone's kept in the picture. It covers me as well, in case there are any problems in the future, where one wants to know why I'm doing things a certain way and not following his/her advice.

Hi Lara, I'm still at it, but have had enough for tonight I think, I'm pleased enough with my progress on chapter 1.

Hope you and Armendaf get your chapter 3s out of the way - what does a battle face look like btw? I was imagining :-s but maybe that's a just a normal PhD face!

Tractorgirl, hope you have a great weekend, you really deserve it!

Swantje, you're starting another MA and you've literally just finished this one???!! You didn't fancy doing a PhD then...?

Hope you all do a good night's work, and see you in the morning.

Quote From olivia:

Smart casual at least-no way jeans! Think about it. You are in a role of a lecturer, people are paying money for the education. If someone showed up to teach me in jeans, I would seriously think that I was being disrespected. It sends a message, what you wear, and jeans are for bars, for casual wear, or for being a student, but if you are in a role of offering your skill and knowledge through teaching, jeans conveys the message that you do not care, you are apathetic or too casual...

I think that's a bit simplistic really, it depends on the context. 'Acceptable' dress codes vary a lot according to subject and college - what looks right for teaching a bunch of product design or avant garde fashion students in an art college would seem completely inappropriate for teaching law or business studies at another university, and vice versa. It's still the same academic level - PhD teaching undergraduates, but there is no single right way to dress for teaching, just guidelines.

Hello there everyone,

I'm joining you today. I couldn't stand the sight of anything PhD-related yesterday, so went off and met someone and did other things, as I couldn't dredge up even a microscopic amount of motivation, but today is ok *phew!!* Sometimes it seems a completely bizarre way to live, working all the time and spending my hol on PhD stuff, so I had to go off and try to remind myself why I was actually doing it. It worked, luckily!

I must say Lara and Tractorgirl, your ability to keep on going with it is quite amazing and very inspiring, you're like the Duracell battery bunnies or cybermen or something... sorry, it is a bit early for me to think of a better metaphor, depends whether you prefer slightly kitsch, fluffy creatures or evil aliens I guess, but intended as a compliment if you can extract that part of it!!

Quote From Lara:

i just hope i am in the same position as you are in, by end of next week. if i am not than i am DEAD MEAT!! dead i tell ya, D.E.A.D!! okay must not panic.

Lara LOL!! You clocked up a huge wordcount yesterday, so hopefully ending up as rotting flesh won't be your final destiny!

Tractorgirl, hope you get something good from the agencies soon and enjoyed the footie, I could hear the cheering resonating all the way up the road round here when they scored, you don't even need to watch the match to know the result lol! Missed DM but will watch it today, naturally!

Armendaf, hope your lecture went well and you're not too knackered from it.

Hi Minamina and Sheena, nice to see some new people on here, I find it it is helping me on this weird academic marathon.

My aims for today - to get on with my chapter 1 rewrite.

Hope your work goes well today, see you later.

It might be an idea to look at what other staff on that course wear to teach and adapt your own wardrobe along those lines, so that you look like 'one of them'. The haircut is probably a good idea if it's as scruffy as you say.

I usually try to be slightly smarter than usual when teaching, as that's what the rest of them wear. Still prefer denim (skirts) but replace the t-shirts with proper shirts, avoid scruffy shoes and add a jacket or shaped cardigan. And a bit of makeup. I feel weird if I'm too formally dressed, but try to look interesting and stylish. As Missspacey said, it depends on what works for your department.

Caz, so how would that work on here then? You could start a new thread and give it a go.

Hi,

I've had enough for today and am off to bed, as am in danger of writing complete crap - I can tell because I can't remember alternative words and phrases I've written loads of times over the years which should be second nature by now, so it is time to stop!! I had a break late afternoon which went on till quite late (9.30ish....ulp) as I'm a bit lacking in willpower today, and also a friend rang up who'd just come back from an artist in residence trip to a Franciscan monastery, so we had lots to talk about. I have finished that pesky blurb for that exhibition though, but will check it through tomorrow before I send it off. Have no idea why I've dragged it out for so long, but will be extremely pleased to see the back of it. Oh yes!!!

Armendaf, your find sounds very serendipitous! Great if it can help you get that chapter out of the way.

Tractorgirl, hope you got more done after your DM session! Hope you don't think I meant all noisy gum chewers are liable to be murderous swine though, but I was impressed that they spotted the culprit through his slightly disgusting gum chewing habits - subtle but clever detective work on the part of Dr Sloane yet again!

Lara, how's it gone today? Hope things are ok, you have done an awful lot recently to be really pleased with and have covered so much ground in the last few days.

See you tomorrow.
