Quote From chrisrolinski:

Heh. Thanks. I meant 'special' in the sense of a particular edition dedicated to one topic. :$

I knew what you meant :-) I just think it seems good being in a special edition, as it emphasises the idea that you and the other contributors are significant new researchers in that field right now. Seems to draw attention to your work in a specific area even more pointedly than an article in an normal edition. I suppose I was thinking about my subject really, and the way people seem to rank publications in themed editions of certain journals as being weightier and more important papers than others, or how they look on cv's, but maybe that's just in my area.

Great news, and very good timing if you feel crap about your work at the moment. And in a special edition of the journal too, as opposed to the ordinary editions the rest of us publish in :p

Doing a PhD, does it make you ugly?

I always thought scruffy, wasted-looking staff had an interesting air of worldliness and life experience about them, when I was a fresh faced nineteen year old.

two questions- viva/examiners + PhD supervisor contact
R

I'm interdisciplinary (arts and humanities/social sciences)

I was asked for suggestions for potential examiners by my supervisor. We decided on the final 3 together which I'm very happy with, as I know they're already interested in my work, so hopefully the whole thing shouldn't be too tortuous for them.

I saw my supervisor about once a month in the first year, or whenever it was needed, depending on whatever point my work had reached - sometimes a bit less frequent, sometimes more. I've always been able to have contact by email or phone if I felt I needed it, as well as face to face meetings, and also have always had a joint team meeting with my second supervisor present about once a year.
