hi everyone I've just seen an advert for people to do freelance scientific consultant work, has anyone signed up to one of these "agencies"? There is one I just saw and they want people to have an ORCID account etc. is it well worth doing this?

I don't know if there has been a previous thread discussing this, so if anyone can post the link to it, that would be great. For example, how much does a freelance analyst charge?

hi Thesis_issues, great advice from bilbo. Doing amendments, corrections isn't exactly something nice to look forward to, I can agree with that, especially when all we want to do after passing our viva -- is relax and get on with our lives!

nevertheless, it is necessary to finish up on corrections, so I would suggest that you do something really nice for yourself first, then sit and buckle down to doing the corrections -- OR -- you could sit and buckle down first, AND do the corrections, AND THEN reward yourself after you have made the corrections :-)

hi babygirl, thanks for sharing again. The first time you posted about this (some time ago, I can't remember when), you indicated that you were not going to change supervisor.

Now, you are also telling us you can't change supervisor.

So really, you are still in the same place you were before.

It is not professional for a supervisor to discuss women and love-life-information with a student. Perhaps he is feeding his own ego when he talks about it, he really feels good when he talks about it.

I don't think you need to continue to do this "sacrifice" to get your phd. Surely you have more self respect for yourself, by listening to him, you are already given in to his unprofessional demands to feed his bloated ego.

Since you don't want to change supervisor, you don't want to report him (as other people have suggested), so this means you will still continue to see this person just to get your phd, you'll have to stop him when he starts talking about non-academic stuff, stay away as much as you can, DO NOT continue to sympathise with this sleeze-ball, and DO NOT be tempted into getting physical with him!!! No matter what.

He is simply not worth it.

Could someone please clarify this for me? I am confused about this thing with case study.

1. If I interview 3 people in 3 different companies, is this ONE case study with 3 subjects, or is this 3 case studies? These 3 people will give varying answers, but the question asked to them is the same one.

2. Is a case study a research study? So let's say I did a case study and one study (piloted an intervention), can I say that two research studies were carried out, and one was a case study.

3. Does anyone have a good sample paper writing about a case study that can be shared with me? (and could I PM you for your email add)

I have a CGPA of 3.44, is this 2nd class lower or 2nd class higher first degree?

I am sorry to hear that you've been laid off work. Soon I might be the same as you, as my funding comes to a close. I know what it's like to be without a job etc. I have been there.

As for phd, if you don't qualify for that NERC funded project, please don't waste any time and energy thinking about it.

I have been in your shoes before, my God there are so many things I don't qualify for.

What I do or at least, keep telling myself to do, is to focus on what I qualify for.

There is no point looking at the same place where we can't get anywhere.

No harm dreaming, though. I dream a lot myself.

If your heart is set on doing a phd, keep looking for projects that will at least provide something for subsistence. Do not take on a phd if it requires you to pay for your own lab materials and traveling.

Search carefully, keep looking and choose carefully.
