hi Roton10, I was told by my supervisor that there will be a "chair" person in my (coming) viva and this person does as you say, umpire/fair play.
The university says I can invite my supervisor to attend my viva as well, which I think is a good idea. I know she can't do anything when I answer questions--but if she is there, she can help explain things in case I don't understand what the examiner is asking (the university told me this) or doing recommendations of stuff the examiner wants me to do, this is where the supervisor is helpful. Other things like body language etc. this is helpful too.
The best thing I like about my coming viva is that there is no public audience. I had this during masters defence--and it was awful!
Wishing you all the best in your viva

Today I feel like writing about cosmetics! Here's a mini review of beauty products by Aldi :-)
I like Aldi's products because they are affordable and most of the time, they do what they say they do :-) Their brand is called LACURA.
And no, I'm not working for Aldi, I still don't have a job :-)
Lacura Lip Gloss -- 4 STARS
PROS: Very moisturising, glides on easily on the lips, and stays on!!! No flaking, and no dryness on my lips even after 2-3 hours post-application.
CONS: Limited range of colour---my favourite is Cherry. Again it depends on where you shop. Some Aldi stores have more stock.
Lacura Lip Stick -- 3.5 STARS
PROS: Very good quality lip stick--very pigmented as well, so if you're looking for long lasting color for a good price--this is it!
CONS: Again, limited range of colour--personally I prefer the lip gloss. But the lipstick is really good :-)
Lacura Mosaic Blush -- 5 STARS
PROS: Very pigmented!
CONS: Only comes in Peach and Pink, would be nice to have more shades--or with glitter!
Lacura BB Cream -- 3 STARS
PROS: Goes very smoothly on the skin, easy to work with, and gives light coverage. Surprisingly long-lasting. Perfect for summer, I just set it with powder--and I'm ready to go!
CONS: If you are seeking high-coverage, this is not for you.
Lacura Face Care Hydrating Cleansing Milk -- 5 STARS
PROS: This one can even take off waterproof mascara! I just have to be careful not to get any cleansing milk in my eyes. It works very well and doesn't leave a dry feeling on the skin after removing makeup with cottonwool.
CONS: None (at the moment)
Lacura Restorative Multi Intensive Serum -- 5 STARS
PROS: Really great for moisturising, my skin seems to feel nourished--well this is what I feel in the morning when I wake up :-) I have not had any breakouts using this as well!
CONS: None (at the moment)
Lacura CottonWool -- 5 STARS
PROS: This is the BEST facial cotton I have ever used--because the cotton does not fray when it is rubbed on the skin, the cotton is held together very well--and it is so durable. Perfect for makeup, taking off nail varnish, cleaning my plants (I use this to rub off dust on my aloe vera plants).
CONS: None at all
ADDED: I've just remembered this one! I'm using the light shaded one, can't remember what it's called now, but definitely the LIGHT one.
Lacura Concealer pen -- 5 STARS
PROS: This is one of the best concealers I have ever used. It is very light and easy to apply--it doesn't crease into the lines under my eyes and does cover redness on my chin or the areas around the nostrils :-)
CONS: Could be made thicker---if the consistency is thicker, it WILL match Clinique's All About Eyes concealer (which is--in my honest opinion---the best eye concealer I have ever used)
OK that's it for today!

Elsie--thank you so much
john--thanks john! yes I hope to enjoy my little break away from working on the thesis---although I know I still have to "work" on it (for the viva!), I don't do very well on holidays--I get withdrawal symptoms when I'm on holiday. During masters I went on a summer holiday by myself but I couldn't relax and was constantly anxious, wow what a nightmare.
Maybe a lot of people are like this---especially students--anyway I hope to ease myself out of this awful holiday-withdrawal-symptom-syndrome!!!
thanks again

hi boo
If I were you, I'd also find out about the lecturing position from the university directly--how many hours per week, is it hourly paid--and how much the university is expecting from you as a lecturer.
They usually take on phd students as part time lecturers, so it isn't a bad idea to go for it.
I wouldn't put my hopes too high (on getting this as a permanent position, though) but it certainly doesn't hurt to go for it. Why not :-)
1. I used to teach 10 hours a week so there was plenty of time for my own phd--but that was only for one module.
2. I'm not too sure about this one--I was also on a studentship--so that did not change--it just meant that I was getting extra income from teaching--and still received the monthly stipends
3. I don't understand this part about "leaving", I think you haven't really left, you would have just landed a job :-) maybe someone else can help here
another thing--in my case--my supervisor was always concerned that if I did work outside the phd, it would interfere with my phd process, sometimes I felt that she was "mothering" me --but most of the time I understood why she did what she did--she meant well
maybe your supervisor is more liberal with you, and will not say anything when they find out that you are working :-)

hi sadphdstudent
I don't have any experience about PhD complaints so I'm sorry I am of not much help here but I hope you are ok---and if you have to wait, I mean, if that is what you have to do right now, perhaps you could look into doing other things that will make you happier (while waiting for whatever it is you have to wait for)
hope you feel better :-)
sometimes starting all over is not as awful as it sounds, who knows?

hi everyone,
phd- and job-searches aside, has anyone watched the new superman yet?
I was a bit disappointed.
First, the 3D effect wasn't spectacular. Next, the movie was too destructive. Also, the new Superman was not as attractive as I thought he would be. For what seemed an eternity, I got the impression that Superman was a confused but kind young man with a huge identity crisis, and lacking in direction.
Then there was the fighting, punching, even Superman was causing a lot of damage to public property. They were fighting in the city, flying and crashing around without thinking of the safety of all the people. So I thought that wasn't very nice.
General Zod could NOT be killed no matter what.
Too much time wasted on fighting with him.
Nice parts of the movie: superman's American mother, and kevin Costner as his dad.
Lastly, Lois Lane. I liked this Lois Lane! She agreed to go in the spaceship of General Zod and she was very brave but not very intelligent. See, she fell out of the sky, was picked up by Superman---and still couldn't even recognise him when he put on his glasses.
End of Movie.
I rate this 3 stars ***
ok now I go back to my phd :-)

hi everyone, thank you so much for your input.
hi hazyjane, yes I will go and see the careers advisor in the university. I have a meeting next month with my supervisor as well, so I'll definitely fit it in! I think I also let go of that job application because I was having "down"-days and couldn't think properly. It's like I saw myself being depressed--all those depressing thoughts and I struggled to separate myself from being swallowed up. And in that struggle I couldn't think properly.
Today I am definitely feeling better that's why I am online now. I'm ready to go again!
Hi stacy, yes you are right about the positive side of things. Eckhard Tolle says we should focus on the Now, and now I really don't have any real problems. He said that people have been conditioned into thinking that being job-less is not a good thing, whereas being job-less can lead to many other things.
Janine so good to have some hopeful news :-)
does anyone know what is meant by this:
"Knowledge and experience of NHS"
can anyone give me some examples?
I saw this in a research assistant position advert. Maybe I should email the principal investigator and ask her how much NHS experience she is expecting?
thanks very much

hey I just posted something similar in wowzer's thread! I had a colleague who had a really horrible supervisor---but she did really well in the end. Somehow that horrible supervisor and his tyrannical working style really did produce her very very excellent phd!!! my colleague and I, we were close friends, she never felt guilty. I think most of the time, stressed and angry--and DRIVEN! wow, yes she was.
however I think there shouldn't be very feelings of guilt.
People stay with lousy supervisors because they choose to, so why should they feel guilty about it :-)
