postdoc job application advice needed
S

hi catalinbond
thank you so much for your advice. I looked at the job spec again and the post doc feels like a phd again, but perhaps this time there is a higher pay and more responsibility (?) I don't know much about post docs as I have not thought about doing this before. I also don't have any publications yet, I have had 3 journal rejections. What do I do about the publication part? surely I cannot say that my manuscripts have been rejected? At this moment I haven't revised the rejected manuscripts yet, as I am still revising chunks of my already-completed thesis.

thanks again

postdoc job application advice needed
S

Hi everyone, I just saw a vacancy for post doc research position. I don't have my phD in hand yet, but I will definitely have it by this year end at the latest. Can I still apply for post docs? Shall I put in "expected 2013" at the PhD part in my CV?

thanks very much for your advice

PLS extension module for SPSS
S

Does anyone know how to fix the PLS extension module for SPSS to run partial least squares regression?
It looks very complicated, I have downloaded the scumpy, numpy files, I think that is for Python and also R 2.15.2 but I don't know how it works.

I found pls.zip from the IBM website but don't understand how to fix it.

Can anyone help?

1GB usage question
S

hi adam and catalinbond
yes, come to think of it, most likely I won't be exceeding that 1GB. I think I will only actually browse on my phone when I'm outside in a waiting room in a hospital or something, or waiting to go somewhere or maybe if I get stuck in a traffic jam :-)

I also just found another package with "All you can eat data" but I'm not sure what that is.
Anyway its too late for that since I already signed up with orange.

thanks for your replies :-)

1GB usage question
S

hi there, could somebody give me some advice please. I am not tech savvy enough :-)

I have just upgraded my phone package and I'm not sure about 1GB of broadband usage.

How many youtube videos can I watch on 1 GB?
When people say stream movies in your phone, are they talking about using youtube on the phone?

Also, if I use wifi on the phone (and turn off Mobile Data) does that mean that I have not used that 1GB?

Another thing I'm not sure is if we have for example, an iPhone and both mobile data and wifi is switched on, does the phone look for wifi first? or mobile data?

thanks very much

Confused about a post doctorate or another Phd related job
S

hi Chopsticks20
welcome to the forum! Its great that you have 3 co-authored papers. I don't even have any papers--I wrote 3 but they were rejected; I spent so much time correcting, changing etc.etc.; now I have to speed up my writing, as I really have to finish this phd.
So actually, there are others worse off than you :-)

please don't feel down about your 1st author paper not happening yet :-)

I have friends doing postdoc; and they do it because they haven't found jobs (!). It's like a cycle, one post doc after another. but then again, this is only restricted to less than 10 people (my friends!). That said, I have a friend who got a job immediately after her phd (and she wasn't even interested in postdocs). I guess it will come to you, whatever happens :-)

good news is that you will have one last year.

now you are only thinking to go down that line (of post doc) or not! In my opinion, if you feel that you are ready to learn something new and different, doing a postdoc or getting a job shouldn't be any different. Why don't you worry about this later.

Who knows you might find a job--and like it. Or you might find a post-doc and decide you want to do something else!
Why worry about it? Just enjoy your last year of phd, as you said you love what you do (and you are obviously GOOD at it!).

Nearer to the time you finish (your phd) you will definitely have a clearer picture of where you are heading.

At the end of my tether and worried that I may be asked to quit my PhD
S

hi natassia
how are you? I was at KT1, ended up going by car; it is a nice part of london. I got the walkit app; but ended up not using it as the Maps on iphone was a lot faster (!). I also did the touristy stuff like going to see the EYE. I did not pay to go up in the eye. Queue was too long, and didn't really want to spend money on it, so I just stood near and took pictures.

please don't worry about your literature review. From the August chapter you sent them, your supervisors had agreed that your work had shown signs of development, this is a good thing. I don't think they will ask you to leave.

I've only know one person who was asked to leave. But he was a brilliant student. The problem with him was that he did not even hand in anything (!!!), he could not finish writing even short reports on time; he couldn't even turn up at the lab on time (!!!); he was having a nervous breakdown, poor lad.

As for my writing, I've had my supervisors change and cancel out A LOT of my writing, I've become NUMB to it since then.

While it is true that we may feel some loss of confidence and possibly some niggling doubts (!!!), I think we should ask ourselves are we going to see this through--and keep reminding ourselves that we do GOOD work, then we are GOOD writers--and we can persevere! :-)

You ARE good enough to do a PhD!!!

please don't worry, you'll be ok
