hi natassia, hazyjane and maccle
thank you so much for your replies! I really appreciate it. I'm in Stratford upon avon now; I will be going to london tomorrow by car; but after that I want to take the Underground.

yes the postcode is wrong, I misread my own handwriting!!! yes you are right it is NW9.

I'll look up the tfl and walkit sites.

I forgot to ask, shall I get an oyster card? Will that get me to NW9 and back. I also need to get to KT1 and Chelmsford Essex.

thanks very much again for your help

writing question
S

hi, I'm struggling with my writing.

can somebody please clarify this with me,

I see the same sentence in papers, for example

"The pattern tends to increase with weight (Goll et al., 2003)."

The authors (for example Brown et al. 2005 and Guthrie, 2010) have written the same thing somewhere in their papers, is this plagiarism?

should the sentence somehow be re-phrased into something like

"The increase of pattern tends to occur with weight (Goll et al., 2003)"

then this is not plagiarism?

thanks very much

Writing and Reference Software for Mac
S

hi adamsky2012
I use latex on my mac.
For referencing I have jabref and also bibdesk. I use bibdesk on my mac and the jabref on the pc installed in my lab.

if you are patient, like learning new things and do not mind the initial struggle (and possibly some frustration),
then use Latex, as it is a lot smoother than Word. It can handle really big files; you don't see the big Wheel turning when MSWORD is trying to open some files.

further studies
S

hi eabioh
no 1. Yes :-) however you need to look into which branch of medical science. For example, biostatistics. Biologists (well, some!) do have some trouble with mathematics. Mathematicians, on the other hand, may have the knowledge for analysis, but do not know enough biology principles to interpret the results!!! So its always nice to have a balance here!

no 2: I can't answer this one specifically, but there WILL BE institutions looking for people with a mathematical background. If you're willing to "struggle" a bit (especially in the first few months/years) learning up the biology side, there will be many many opportunities to enter the medical arena.

just keep looking, keep your options open
hope this helps
good luck!

Shall I continue in academia
S

hi Ironman, I found your post a bit confusing.

From what I read, you have already finished your PhD. Congratulations!

Is your real worry about your postdoc job? Why should you quit?
Don't you already have a PhD? That piece of paper which says you have been conferred a doctorate?

why are people telling you your phd is a problem? where exactly is the problem?

why do you let people's opinions affect you?

from what I read in your post:

you already have a phd, but no publications. You are a postdoc WITH publications, I think you have a good achievement and a bright future!!! why don't you move on from postdoc instead? By move on, I mean, look forward to a future FROM your postdoc without regrets on your phd.

Don't look back.

If Cinderella went back for her slipper, she would have never become a princess.

refworks help
S

hi Sneaks
I haven't had this problem before. I had an earlier issue about refworks not recognising my citation ids. I went and asked the librarian. She was so helpful, she sat with me and went through every little detail. And the problem was solved!

HOW I CODED THE RESPONSE OF POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE QUESTION?
S

hi eddy
are these questions in ONE questionnaire, you need to be consistent in coding. I'd follow the same older in coding; only when you have done the data analysis, you need to see which direction it shows; for example low post-test scores for certain questions would mean more agreeable for question 2.

good luck
