regression in simple words
S

hi everyone
I'm in a fix, could someone please help me here?

how do I explain in linear regression the phrase "when the other variables are held constant" or "when they are controlled for", what is the simplest way to explain it? The audience is people who do not know what regression is.

Thanks very much

Advise before starting PhD
S

hi again :-)
well you have 2 months of "freedom" left :-)
if your soon-to-be supervisor has sent you something to read, yes of course you could start right away; it would be to your advantage after all
BUT
if I were you, I'd just take it easy and relax a bit;
and only read whatever I can in whatever time I have.
Don't put any pressure onto yourself
why, because there is a great chance that there will BE pressure in future
so be kind to yourself now :-)

once you start the phd, there is so much work to do.
Life is not quite the same after that.

yes I'm in the last year of phd. If you need to ask me anything specific, PM me in case I might not be able to check back on the thread.
best of luck

Hi Davenikita2
there are lots of information in the main page here www.findaphd.com :-)
Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS to you; it's nice to read good news.

I have some tips for you; they are not academic tips but rather practical stuff

1. Put aside some money every month, save early in case your funding finishes before your phd :-)

2. Be very organized (with folders etc.) with your documents (for example your progress report or registration document) because maybe 2 or 3 years later your supervisor could ask you for it (and you've forgotten where you've put it--and all the other copies look exactly the same because they've been amended so many times!)

3. Do as much as you can in your first year (sometimes the first year tends to be "free-er", you have less pressure, less things to do etc.) When I say do, an example is to read as much as you can first; because after you start analysing data and writing it gets harder and harder to squeeze time for everything else :-)

4. Find a good place to live. Otherwise it will be very hard for you to work. Also, if you are not happy with your living circumstances (for example: the heating is not working, bathroom leaking etc.), do something about it. Don't be bullied into living in a less-than-livable home.

5. When you are stuck, always seek advice. Don't keep problems to yourself otherwise they'll stay in your head and drive you crazy.

Once again, congratulations and have a wonderful journey

FIXED DEPOSIT ACCOUNT- IS IT ALLOWED FOR UK VISA
S

hi, u need to show proof of funds, FD account is permissible
but this is not presented in the embassy
the visa process goes through a separate agency appointed for it
I think u would need to present proof of funds for at least one year (of living expenses in the UK) as well as how you would pay your fees.
it is better that you check the visa website

goodluck

confidence tips

hi blue
I just read your post
how are you doing?
I think its probably worry that makes you think you've lost self confidence :-)
One tip is to write all your good qualities on a piece of paper, and carry it with you (put it in your handbag). Pull it out to read whenever you feel down, it will help to give you a boost.

Research Songs
S

hi slizor
so have u found your choice of motivational music? :-)
I like to run my youtube playlists
I put all sorts in them. I like especially music written by Dan Fogelberg, and also played by Bob Acri.
When my playlist has all sorts of music, the feel of it changes, and it helps to keep me going.
