when you say voluntary work are you talking about voluntarily going to work (for money)
because it will be very very very very very difficult to do a phd without funding AND have to work again at the same time

If I were you I would only take this offer if it is really what I want to do;
please do explore other options and look for funded phds (USA, Germany etc.)

it will be easier for you; if you have funding, you will also have peace of mind (when next to pay rent etc.)

why dont you use Latex? its very good with big files, doesn't crash or get stuck.
You can put footnotes easily too.
A word of caution, though, it does get rather daunting to learn (in the beginning) but believe me you will like it in the long run. It is a lot better than Word.

don't be sad about it; instead use it to your advantage; when you are working on that piece of academic stuff, make it the best one; and then let it go and spend time with your boyfriend, friends, family, just remember every time you work on a paper that you also need to do something else :-)

I've gone back to work (or at least trying to);
no choice because I am behind my writing schedule
but two whole days of christmas were good enough for me
