hi eska
I am so glad you are ok and it is benign. My cousin had breast cancer; she's well now.
Why don't you put your feet up and relax, do something nice, don't do any work today.

Lack of data
S

hi :-) I am wondering when was the last time I watched Benny Hill :-)
I am having the same problem. Sometimes I feel miserable about it. I'm supposed to use the time (wisely!!!) to write down whatever I have done (before this data collection hiccup) but the truth is, I'm also having difficulty sitting down to actually writing stuff.

You're not alone. You'll be ok since your supervisor said so.

For me, my results (if based on the present data set) will not be good; its simply not enough. Not nice on a phd thesis, I would say.
So I'm struggling on, and hopefully will have more data to back up my model.

eligibility for ph.d. with scholarship
S

hi subhasri welcome to the forum
I don't know how to help you; I think you need to help yourself first before any of us can help you :-)
Firstly, you have done well so far. So don't worry.
Next, you need to have more self-confidence, if you want something, go all out and get it.
If you have a dream, make it come true.
Go and search for physics scholarships; there are a lot, I tell you, just start looking.
Start with websites like www.findaphd.com/ or google your topic, and see what comes up

You will surely find something. Good luck

Undergrad Supervisor issues - will that affect my PhD?
S

hi dwro8ea
I remember having to pay for sequencing but this was because my (very first) supervisor did not have any funds left; I gladly paid it, my samples were good; and it definitely cost less than £100! I'm sorry to hear that your supervisor refused to give you a reference. Sometimes we do get along, and sometimes not.

My previous supervisor was just ok I guess, however she said I put pressure on her and she avoided me (!). She did not answer my emails and stayed away from her office! Whenever I had a problem, I had to solve it myself because she offered no help. I couldn't even change supervisors or change my project. Later I found out that this was her personality; she also treated other students like this. It was not personal. I maintained a cordial relationship with her; and I did not ask her for a letter of reference (because I thought she would have written me a really lousy one; just cut and paste, and change the name for every student who asked her for one).

In answering your two questions:

1) No
2) Yes, and do speak to the prospective supervisor about it

good luck

having a baby now?
S

======= Date Modified 08 Sep 2010 19:11:43 =======
hi Siwee22
I also asked the same question; I was told if I got pregnant I would not be allowed in the lab because of health & safety regulations; I would have to stop the phd for at least one year (to allow for adjustments after the birth, childcare etc.). So I will not have any data.

If I stayed in the UK with a pregnancy, I would not be able to work in the lab, I would have to deliver the baby in the UK and also not able to fly to my home country after 6 months gestation. And this would also mean I would be away from my family, especially my mother who is a great help. At the same time I have to consider going home (if I had a baby) to have the baby there, and then after some 12 months, come back to the UK, and have to start all over (with the lab work that I left halfway!). It would not be impossible, but very difficult, I think.

what I can say is that if you have a support system here with you (partner/family etc) and if you can plan everything out nicely, then go ahead and have the baby. You need to see how far left you have in your project and sort of, fit everything around that, or see if you can fit your project around the baby.

Don't worry about getting another job afterwards etc.

You need to get past the project and baby bit first.

It is not impossible to work from home with a baby; but it will be difficult if you have to do everything yourself. If you are able to find childcare or your mum can help for a couple of hours, or get help with the housework etc., then it will help you a lot. You need to rest a lot.

oh yes, I forgot the boss bit. I dont think it will piss off your boss; after all pregnancy is every woman's right and that's life :-)

anyway you choose, plan properly :-)

hi adeline
is there anyone you can speak to about this in your uni? how much more do you need to do for the phd?
I can understand what you mean when you say you feel like you're only doing labour there; this was the same for two of my friends back in my former university.

but they just coped with it; agonized with it; and somehow managed to submit and finish. Now one of them is doing a phd and the other has either got a job or still looking for one (I'm not in frequent contact with him).

If you are sure that it is definitely not what you want to do in your life in future, at least you know NOW what you want to do with your life.

If you have a phd in Mathematics, it doesn't mean you need to make a career in mathematics. But nevertheless, having a phd (even if it is in another field to the chosen area of your life path) has its advantages.

I would suggest you speak to someone, or find a counsellor to discuss how you feel about your phd now before you make a final decision.
