hi there!!! I must say I love your username!!!!!! EATINGELEPHANTS is so so so nice!!!!!
I have to be honest with you; everytime I say or plan to do something in the evening once I get home, I almost always NEVER do it. So the best thing to do is to make the most out of the working time I have in the morning or afternoon.
For example, if I haven't done anything in the morning, I make sure I do something in the afternoon. Or if I haven't worked all day then I will try to do something in the evening (when I get home!) and about 80% of the time, I do this, because my brain or body remembers it hasn't exactly worked yet in the day.
as for writing articles/journals, just take it as part of the phd because then the article(s) become chapter(s) so then after putting together the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle, you'll get a complete piece in good time :-)
I teach once a week; and if I am teaching and I try to do my phd work I find that I cannot completely "separate" myself from each; for example rushing back from the lab I would have to "adjust" myself back into phd mode and sometimes its just not possible. So on my teaching day, I do my teaching and after that, next day, go back into Phd mode. For me, that seems better. I am also able to concentrate better.
As for volunteer work, I don't do any now. I also used to have a part time job with the local council, but it was taking too much of me, and I had to give that up.
About having a life, I would say, life goes on, phd or not. So I try to fit it in around; but maybe this is easier for me in the sense that I like being alone, I hardly go out; I like my own space; so I don't find myself missing out on hanging out with friends etc. I think we just have to work around fitting in our phd into our life, well something like that. I may not be the best person to talk about this :p
anyway, that said I think you'll be ok.

hi dan and cheekybint
thanks for your replies. I've also received scam mail about receiving lots of money etc. and how to claim it; and also about someone who's father was a general and he had access to lots of money but needed some "help" for which part of that money will be paid to those who "help". The addresses in those email were mostly Nigeria.
could it be that people in african countries are good at this? I just find it strange. In some countries in Africa, things are so messed up; there's not enough food to eat, no proper medical facilities etc. yet their people are so good at scamming. I remember reading in the newspapers that vulnerable women have been cheated by scammers in africa. This is out of context but could it be that people who lived in deprived countries become creative in ways of making money.

hi, does anyone know how else we can protect our email accounts from being spammed? I've received 3 emails from friends who were supposedly robbed and stranded some place, asking for money. How did the scammers get access to my friends' email? If I (and others) have received these scam-mail, will our email addresses be accessible by the scammer(s) then?

hi alpaca
A stress relief thread is always a good idea. I've also been stressed myself; under stress I am not able to sleep properly. See now its 3.34am! :-)
Please try not to worry about illnesses etc. Do keep positive thoughts always always.
I hope you're feeling better.

hi SBCC
I just discovered that Dropbox installed Growl for me!!! I saw this "paw" and the next thing I knew I had an application without even knowing it. I don't like dropbox because of this. I'm going to have a look at Filechute later tonight.
but first, I need to see how to un-install growl and dropbox.
thanks again

hi, I need to ask about dvd and cdr. Whats the difference about a dvd blank disc and cd-r blank disc? Is it because if its a dvd, there's more space?
I need to put lots of songs, so I can burn a dvd blank disc and it will become an audio disk, right?
thanks

hi sbcc are you using the free version of filechute?
it took ages for a 800MB file to be uploaded onto Dropbox.
Will it be the same thing for filechute?
anyway I have finally learnt how to use dropbox HAHAHA I'm so not tech-savvy.
thanks again everyone
