Why does no one ask me questions at conferences?!

I'm also considering changing the format of my presentations - instead of boring old powerpoint. So if anyone has experimented with different approaches, I'd be interested

boys on the roof
S

hi DanB
thanks a lot
I've just called the local police station; the officer explained to me that I should have called them immediately yesterday and they would have sent someone over, but I didnt know the number yesterday. At least they have it on record now.
I hope yesterday's roof running-climbing was just a one-off. But it did scare me.

thanks again

boys on the roof
S

yesterday I heard some banging sound which turned out to be two lads (maybe 12-14 years) climbing onto my roof from the wall (from the alley). It looked like they were going to my neighbor's roof but needed to walk on mine first before getting there.

When I saw them, I quickly got my camera and took some pictures. They saw me and started swearing, and then pulled their t-shirt over their heads and still ran over the roof (to get down).

I dont remember if the alleygates were locked, but there was a black man doing something with the garbage but I think he came from one of the adjoining shops because this happened around 7.30pm so he couldn't be from the council. I don't know where these children came from. I also couldn't see where they ran to after jumping down from my roof.

Please advise me, should I do anything about this? Which number to call? I think 999 is not the one? I remember someone told me that for noise there is a separate number.

thanks

What is wrong with you all?? I am sitting here in Scotland with the windows still open most evenings and all night in the bedroom most nights.

I'll tell you what's wrong. I don't know what it's like north of the border, but where I am if I leave my window open I get massive moths flying in. These aren't just any moths either. They're kamikaze moths that dive bomb, so big and thick that they sound like bats flapping their wings. Instead, I'm resigned to having to keep my windows closed, just listening to them butt my window - bumph, bumph, bumph. I hate summer.

wally this is so true!!! there're lots of moths where I am too; yes so annoying!!! Also lots of flies in the alley.

Ev, are you living with people who won't let you use the heating? How do you get by winter? I had a housemate like that (2 years ago) she did not allow the rest of us to use any heating because she wanted to save money to bring home. For her, a masters degree is just another way to earn money. I think that was her 3rd masters. After that, I didn't want to share house with people who won't use heating.

Sneaks still no response from the real estate people.

Too much paid work?
S

hi button :-)
Another job is a good idea :-) but first how will your phd go, is it one where you have to do everything (run around, do recruitment or lots of experiments in the lab or field work etc). If you have a rather "safe" one where time is not spent on running around and you know more or less how the supervisory meetings take place etc. AND if this 1-day a week job is easy and not taxing for you, then go for it :-)

If the job can give you more stress, don't do it :-)

Teaching is nice too; only thing is it's time-consuming and marking assignments can give you headache.

is anyone using their heating
S

hi Sneaks, Blue, Jepsonclough, Purplecat, everyone
Im in north yorkshire, not as cold as up in Scotland I guess.
I'm trying not to use the heating---stretching this as long as possible :-) :-)
An electric blanket is really a good idea, I should get one. Perhaps this weekend.

Im still paying my bill quarterly. Does it make a lot of difference going on direct debit?
I remember my friends on direct debit pay a similar amount to what I use; but then again perhaps it will be better in the long term if there are discounts. I was told by Npower that I can wait until the next quarterly bill before going on direct debit so the estimate is there. Either that or I start paying whatever they estimate.

hi everyone I'm just asking if anyone is using heating these months?
I haven't used my heater since April. I still do need to wear my thick housecoat at home, though.

hi phdforever
I am doing mine full time, even so I find it hard to organize myself and get going. Theres simply too much distraction, even simple things can be a bother.

We should all have some kind of plan, so maybe you can make (or you may already have done so) a gantt chart of your "estimated" progress, make one, stick it on the wall and see how you go from there. YOu'd have to estimate how long it would take you to do say data collection, data anlysis etc.etc. If you check the gant chart you made (from last year), you can actually gauge your progress. you can also shift around your schedule.

Yes we should all be reading and writing constantly. Do you also have friends who are part timers? You can plan together, support each other and then you won't feel lonely, though this forum is good for anonymity and there are really wonderful people here.

best of luck

Thinking of quitting as can't stand notion of time could be spent elsewhere
S

hello there
I think you can get out of this "mess", how much more of the phd do you need to do?
how bout finding a way round this area first?
then you can travel and do all the things you like, maybe just a little bit of time is needed to get over this.

If you leave the phd now, it seems like a waste, and you did put effort in this! of course!

sorry to hear you are broke, but money will come (and it goes)

UK Bank Account
S

hi Tzantha
oh I dont know which bank has the lowest conversion fees; maybe someone else can fill you in.
I always think that banks don't give good conversion rates.

someone else can share with you which bank, rates, charges etc.

I'd like to tell you that I use HSBC and I am happy with this bank.

The only other bank I have used is Lloyds; I did not find Lloyds customer-friendly.
I don't use Lloyds anymore.
