LaTeX questions from satchi really new-user
S

hi! Is anyone using online templates?
I downloaded one for my thesis and have put in the text part,
but now how do I make a table, is there a template for this as well, and how do I put abbreviations? I just want to make a list of abbreviations:

BC = before Christ
ASAP = as soon as possible

but with proper spacing.

thanks a lot

wrong masters?
S

hi sholok
Monkey is right. On the other hand, a masters which is done well (with flying colours :-) ) is not a waste of time; you can still go further with it. However, it will be to your advantage if you had some idea of what phd you wanted to do before you did your masters.

2 questions about prospective PhD life
S

hi akui
Congratulations on your PhD journey!!!
:-) :-) :-)
1. Most people do finish the work required for their phd in 3 years but writing up may take longer.
There is a professor of media Tara Barbazon; her students always finish EVERYTHING in 3 years. But she goes about a very strict regiment; which is good I guess; according to her, a PhD is completed in three solid years.

2. Dont worry about how you should call your supervisor. If you come from a place where teachers are always called Mr/Dr/Prof., thats fine too. In fact, some academics do appreciate being addressed "prof. so-and-so" or "dr so-and-so". Just go with what you are comfortable with, as long as you address your supervisor politely.

When you are in the UK longer, and more familiar with everything else (supervisor included), you may go on first names if you like. Just go with the flow.

Hope this helps

How do you know when someone is flirting with you?
S

hi DanB
possible answers:

flirty:
between the flirter and flirtee, there may be some topic/something flattering or nice about the flirtee that they flirter will do or say to the flirtee; or flirter might do something a wee bit extra (applies also to giving looks--see the eyes etc)

friendly:
consistent behaviour from the flirter

hope this helps

The moaning thread
S

oh no! today we seem to have more negative posts!!! Hi Ev!!!
I don't hate my phd but I don't like all the silly paper work, filling in documents etc.etc. that I have to do in my university; its time consuming.

I share an office with people who eat CRISPS at least twice a day, and they chew so loud it drives me crazy. I can't tell them to stop eating. I would like to STOMP on their crisps and crush everything under my shoes but I can't do that. I also want to tell someone (in my office) to STOP SCRAPING the plastic containers with his spoon (!!!!) because the sound is so irritating but I can't. I can even hear the guy sitting behind me CHEW AND SWALLOW banana. I hate it. So I try not to work in the office if I can.

if you change your mind about your phd, post back here xxx

Threatening, bullying supervisor?
S

hi rollercoaster
i am so sorry to hear about your supervisor; you've worked so hard.
I'm also sorry to hear that you hurt your back. I guess your thesis is more important that that paper; but your health is the MOST important. Please do concentrate on getting well.

I am fortunate not to have any major supervisor issues. Please do get well soon

Topic-Supervisor dilemma
S

hi Olix
welcome to the forum
I'm not too sure what your issues are. From what I've read:
1. your research interests have shifted but in your opinion it looks like things will not go well if you change labs/supervisors

2. now you have lost confidence in your supervisor and are thinking working "away" from him

3. you might consider working up to masters

my comments:
1. research/study interests shift for everyone; people grow by and by; nothing is ever the same all the time. I think you need to ask yourself if how you can continue with your present topic, how make it better, what else you can do for it; and weigh the pros and cons of changing labs/supervisors. My biggest advice in this for you is to do what you feel is right; an example: monetary reward is not as valuable as personal satisfaction

2. neglecting the presence of your supervisor is definitely not a good idea; everyone has supervisor issues; we like them, we hate them, we get angry with them, we develop crushes on them. There may be a solution to your issue; but I dont know the rest of the story. Here's an example: one student and her supervisor couldn't get along, in the end, they decided it was best that she got someone else to supervise her.

3. working up to a masters is an option if you find that you've gone too far (to stop) and there seems to be no other way; you dont want to continue but you have enough stuff for a masters.

hope this helps

have a nice evening
