Yes you should apply for other PhDs just in case this one doesnt work out, though I hope this one works out for you.Some PhDs start in january so you could apply for a few PhDs that start in january 2008.

What is she doing on there anyway. It makes me sick because the physics industry is so well paid compared to life sciences. I still want to work in the field after I finnish my PhD even though the pay is pittance if I was in her shoes I wouldnt be on that show.

I agree totally. My parents just don't understand what research actually is. My dad constantly asks me 'is everything going to schedule' and when I say no, because I've had a set back or hit a block, he ask's why not, didnt you follow the protocol? and how long will it take to get back on track?, a day? a few days?

Have a question for those of you that study at research institutes. Was just wondering about working hours, is it strictly 9-5 or can you come and go in the lab as you please as you can for example in academic institutions.

It depends on where you are going to do your PhD (inside london or outside). I study outside and am currently on £12,300 per year, for inside london its £14,350. This increases anually. Usually for home students (UK) the studentship includes a stipend (figures quoted above) and payment of tuition fees. It does sound strange that your department is asking to apply for funding if you are being covered by the BBSRC award. However it could be that it is for extra funding. I would definitely ask at the department/graduate office to clarify.

There's a girl on my MRes course who has already done a masters before this one. The reason she gives for doing 2 masters is that it is a tradition in Taiwan (where she is from).
