Yes. The same thing has happened to me. I have moved uni to do my masters and I really dont like the place at all. However I really needed to go somewhere else for my masters as the facillities at my undergraduate institution were not good and therefore my lab skills and research experience would have been really limited if i'd stayed. I can't say I regeret going because I had to move on.
So all I can do is say that its only for 1 year and then I can go somewhere else for my PhD, which I am doing. But it's not easy.
Was it practical for you to stay at yr undergrad institution?

Hi guys. I have been told on several occasions that there is less competition for PhD funding in Ireland compared to England or Scotland. I was just wondering if any body has any views or experience of this.

I think you should give it a try. If your referees feel that you will get a 2:1 then you should go for it. If you get good references and they predict that you will get a 2:1 then you will be in with a chance. You could also apply for a masters just in case you dont get the grade then you can top up yr 2:2 and re-apply next year.

I just wanted to know if anybody knows how important the actual marks you get for your masters, as in most institutions you can only fail, pass or get a distinction. So if you dont get a distinction and pass how much do your actual marks matter.

I think the same thing almost happened to me. I applied for a PhD at UCL which was advertised in New scientist, within a week of it being advertised and there didnt appear to be a deadline, and within 3 days of submitting my CV I was invited for an interview. I didnt actually go to the interview as luckily I was offered my first choice and so cancelled the interview. However after reading this it makes me wonder if they hadnt already decided on the student but were inviting people for interview because they had to.

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about doing a PhD at the health protection Agency, in particular at the centre for infections at colindale. I wanted to know how it would compare to doing a PhD in an academic setting. I would appreciate if anyone has any information. Thanks
