Article on PhD supervisors
S

i'd be interested in reading that. will you let us here on the board know when it appears, and where?

Heath Ledger is dead
S

oh, it might very well be that his wikipedia entry is managed by his manager. so that would explain that.

sorry to hear about that, too - though people do die all the time. it's part of life... other deaths make me more upset.

thesis tummy ache

relax!

start your work for that deadline by... taking some time out! you will be fine. just remember to take care of yourself, because you need to be in shape and health in order to rise to this challenge.

i'm sure your supervisors know what they are doing and have set you a realistic deadline. it's doable!

Inspired by my supervisors
S

i am totally inspired by my supervisor - her work, anyway, which i think is just fabulous.

Am I eligible for post grad funding?
S

unfortunately, citizenship is only of limited relevance. without the residency, there is no nationality that will get funding.

re other sources: check out http://www.educationuk.org/pls/hot_bc/bc_edufin.page_pls_user_scholarship

that is a database that lets you search for possible funders.
good luck!

Feeling down and out :(
S

sorry to hear that you are having a hard time!

sometimes when in a similar situation, it helps me to become aware of how much i am actually doing (teaching, projects, private stuff like moving house, etc.) and realise that it is so much, it is really normal that i am exhausted and lack energy.

it also helps to know that these periods are part of the process. maybe after a few months you will realise that you actually formed some very important thoughts in this time, all the while thinking you were just being distracted.

oh and i sympathise with the essay marking. that's one of the worst things i ever had to do, it seriously transforms my brain into mush.

Procrastination...Movies...Have you watched "Juno"?
S

yes i have, but it's been a while. i also like his new book, "a thousand splendid suns" ... uh ... just getting confused here ... i think that's what it's called anyway!

watching the movie, i did wonder how much of the "goodness" of the movie was actually in the movie and how much i was projecting due to remembering the book.

Has the law really won?
S

hang on in there. you have been here before and it has passed, and it will pass this time too.

don't know if that helps, but i frequently feel just like you do.

i am sure you are doing great. some people, at least, believe in you, or you wouldn't be doing your PhD, and you wouldn't have got that lectureship. so, even if you don't believe in yourself, you must have done SOMETHING right or things wouldn't be working out like this.

ARGHH! Why do the apathetic ones have the best luck?!
S

just maybe, this girl is really really insecure and is covering it all up by pretending she couldn't care less.

Procrastination...Movies...Have you watched "Juno"?
S

i watched "the kite runner" day before yesterday. good movie, but if you are so inclined, bring tissues.

Am I eligible for post grad funding?
S

check the AHRC website for details, but in general, if
- you have EU citizenship
- you have lived in the UK for the last three years before your PhD starts
-then you are eligible for full studentships (ca. 12'000£/year plus fees, for three years)
if
- you have EU citizenship
- you have lived in the EU (outside of the UK)or Switzerland for the last three years
-then you are eligible for fees only studentships.
be aware however that these are (both) very competitive.
some universities provide their own studentships which are sometimes independent of citizenship and previous residency.

When your PhD becomes your supervisor's PhD...
S

glad to hear that it went well, pinkneuron! keep it up!

strange days--what is going on?!
S

now that you mention it, i have been experiencing similar stuff. had to apologize to my s.o. for being so grumpy, after we just re-moved in together, which i am actually really enjoying - but somehow i'm just moody and can't get any work done. could be SAD - i like your typo olivia, making it an "effective disorder", well it is really affecting my effectiveness! - but then, probably it is the aliens who changed some ingredients in the atmosphere to see what would happen. don't we just all love being the subjects of alien experiments?

Anybody there? (more detail for bot :P)
S

me, too. having a hard time doing what i should (marking essays - arrgh). but, trying not to hang out here too much

IS THERE ANY STRATEGY TO BE ACCEPTED ??
S

unless stated anywhere - just wait. i know it takes patience and costs nerves!
if you don't get a reply a good time after the timeframe given by the university (-ies) you applied at, you should call to inquire. but really only after that time.
(a friend never got a reply, the reason being that her approved application had fallen behind a secretary's desk... she called, and called again, and only after insisting did she hear that indeed she had been accepted. but that is an exceptional case!)
