come ON! does seriously no one here know how old the captain is? or are you just to shy to tell?

What thesis advice would you give to people about to start?
S

thanks cc.
i will get my stylesheets organized before i start writing! and make sure i collect my references as I go along - i do that normally anyway, as i use endnote, but sometimes i'm sloppy. it's good to be reminded from someone who's just gone through the final steps that it will be so much more work then than now!

argh! is it possible to write 8,000 words in four days?
S

well done, both of you! i hope you're enjoying your well deserved rest!

PhD has really knocked my confidence
S

wow, great!!!! CONGRATULATIONS! what a feat! what an achievement! i hope you are VERY proud!

online communities/networking..am i the only person in the world to not have joined one?
S

i think someone actively wants you to join. but maybe not so specifically you - that person might just want more "friends" and told facebook to send invitations to everyone on his/her outlook contacts list who isn't on facebook already. or something like that.

thanks for the information about facebook opening to google today. i went right on and turned the security setting to "not appearing in google".
i find facebook to be quite nice in a way. it is like everyone were keeping their own blogs or such, and i'm subscribed to them. so without specifically telling specific people, you can inform all your "friends" that you uploaded some pictures or whatever. and when someone else uploads pictures i see it, even if i don't know the person closely enough that he/she would specifically tell me. that keeps me informed of what people are doing who i wouldn't labour to stay in touch with, but who i don't mind keeping in my peripheral vision.

Could I get funding?
S

i'm glad to hear you found a way to go forward which is right for you. at the very least, starting in 2009, you should not have any problems concerning eligibility for funding. just make sure you are able to demonstrate that you have been resident in the UK from sept. 06 onward - that should be easy, considering you have been registered as a masters student and then have a job for the next years.

are you bored?

Ever done anything as emabarrasing as this?
S

mine is 85 and she regularly sends me e-mails and e-cards. just recently (well, a few years ago) she took word- and excel-classes at the village's IT school. she can't deal with mobile phones though because she doesn't hear well and the text on the screen is hardly big enough for her to see.
as she ages it is getting harder, especially dealing with the mouse. recently she got a new computer from her daughters which included a mouse with a scrolling wheel. she said that wheel was the best part of the new computer. they could have had that cheaper

o.stoll well i hope you enjoyed your holidays even if you didn't manage to cycle up the Swiss mountain passes! i envy you that trip. was it as great as expected?

imagine you are the captian of a ship. the ship is 40m long and 8m wide, it has 3 decks, each of which contains 6 cabins with 3 bunks each, except for the top deck, which sports only the captains cabin which is a single. the ship is fully staffed which means all bunks are occupied. the average age of the crew is (x+828) /((d-1)*c*b+1)
where
d is the number of decks
c is the number of cabins/deck
b is the number of bunks/cabin
and x is the age of the captain

how old is the captain?

My First Day As a PhD Student.
S

wow, thanks for sharing this, PinkNeuron. as mentioned elsewhere my own first day, last year, was horrible and had me crying on the shoulders of strangers and wanting to quit before it was over. i think it is just dangerous to underestimate the whole "newness" of it all. give yourself some time to settle into the new routine, take it step by step and you will be just fine!

to your own room and desk. that's fantastic! it sounds like you found yourself a good environment to do your PhD!

Shuffling of references by end note
S

hey nicola,
i suppose that's why you can put keywords in. then through searching by keyword you get your subject specific selection. this has the added benefit that some articles can easily go into several categories by giving them several keywords...

if you really do want to keep separate libraries, why don't you just make sure you have one "master" library where there is everything, and always cite from here. as long as you do that strictly, you can keep as many separate libraries as you like.

me too I will be dealing with language/translation problems, with the added difficulty that Swiss German is only a spoken, not a written language. So the interviews will be in Swiss German. There is no way to write in Swiss German so I will have to translate the interviews into German while transcribing. But my thesis will be in english. Gets me confused... I don't know how I will solve that yet.
