thesis proof reading
S

if no-one will help you out and you don't want to pay for it, so you have to do it yourself, a trick is to proof-read from back to front.

ideally you could proof-read a friends thesis who would proof-read yours, if both of you are native english-speakers.

ESRC open competition - results out?
S

ditto to everyone! keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

i wonder what possible reasons the registries could have to not inform us right away?

i wonder if they will inform by e-mail or by snail-mail? i jump every time my mailclient goes "ding-dong" announcing a new e-mail...

good luck!

nope. anyone else?

Are horses related to sea horses???
S

hm i guess it depends what you mean by related. categorizations of life forms are human constructs... they are certainly related in that they share, in some languages, a name. they are also certainly related in that they share quite some genetic code. but then, humans and cabbages share about 50% of genes. does that make us related?

Does anyone do Interdisciplinary PhDs
S

my project is by topic, content and methods interdisciplinary. formally i am getting a degree in a single discipline, however. it is organized in that within the department there is a specialist research centre.

i have a suspicion that doing interdisciplinary research at PhD level makes getting funding difficult. but that might just be me.

what kind of interdisciplinarity are you looking at? why are you asking?

If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing?

indeed, jojo could run the businesses of selling Ju's jewellery and katq's woodwork, and perhaps also do the marketing bits for H's bird vet shop.

hah! i have it all planned out. when do we get started?

sounds like we need to get together and get two places. one in a rural setting - juno and others can come for weekends. another place located in a more urban area - H and anyone else who misses the city can go there when they feel like it. since the rural people will be spending weekends in the city, and the urban people will be spending weekends in the countryside, it should never get to stuffed

the bunch of us with all our weird specialist knowledge should get along just fine, and we could spend our time writing children's books and gardening, or earning lots of money in the city if we want to - maybe then jojo would join us too

"I wanna be a diplomat when I is grows up.."
S

in switzerland there is a "diplomat's school" which you can apply to after graduating with a top masters in any discipline. there is a strict entry test and if you pass, you get two years of education - fully paid - before you go on duty as junior diplomat. you will then be sent around the world, never staying anywhere for longer than 2-3 years, for a while. if you then manage to become a senior diplomat you can stay in one country a bit longer.
many diplomats these days work on trade agreements and supranational policy stuff. they don't go to one country but rather form a part of large negotiation teams. you often get people with any kind of economic/legal background in these teams, rather than "trained" diplomats.
there is also the track of the UN - simply apply for an open job there.

oh H, yes, I would maybe do that too. considering JKR it can be quite lucrative, too! i wrote my first story when i was 4 - always loved writing - although i find it frustrating not to be able to write with the same ease in english as i did in german.

i could also see myself "dropping out" - living on a partially self-sustaining farm somewhere warm, with a bunch of friends and kids, prioritising the things that really matter in life

Whoo Hoo (first draft done!)

congratulations!

myself, still got at least 2 years to go.

Narrate your experience finding schools for your programme.

when i applied for my PhD i simultaneously applied for the taught MSc course at the same institution, as fallback option for in case they wouldn't let me progress directly to PhD level (condisering I have a foreign degree).
how i found the place: there was one author in my area of interest who consistently impressed me with her published work. i googled her, found out where she is, saw that they have a PhD and a MSc program there, applied.

i had the "PA to CEO" type of jobs before quitting in benefit of my PhD. i found it can be very interesting and varied. but when i pictured myself doing it for the next 5 or so years, i got frustrated...

suppose i could see myself in international HR management.

ESRC open competition - results out?

i self-funded my first year and applied to ESRC for the consecutive years. unless you've got loads of money it puts you in a awkward situation near the end of year 1 - money's gone, you don't know yet if any is coming in, you can't really afford to keep going as you are, but applying for open jobs only have makes sense if you are still waiting for funding results... but i'm sure it can be done and by now i can give you whole lists of places you can apply to after having started. haven't managed to actually procure any money yet, though.

Good luck with the viva Brian!
