What citation styles do you use?
S

oh, and as to your real question: i currently use APA 5th which displays the page numbers; it looks like this (Brown, 2002: 66). i'd rather not have the comma, though, but couldn't find another one without the comma.

What citation styles do you use?

hi jojo,
you can add page-numbers to any style (thad doesn't already have them) by adapting the style in "edit-output style".

however i found that when i use endnote on campus i can't edit the output styles (because they are stored on a server and i don't have writing rights on the server) - might that be your problem too?

does anyone here know if it is possible to save an adapted style locally, and how, if using a server-based version of endnote?
thanks!

hi there,
for your second research interest, you could check out Martin Bauer's work and the BIOS centre at the LSE (www.lse.ac.uk/bios).
i know of one PhD student there who also has an agricultural background and is now doing a PhD on public opinion of GMO, supervised by said M.Bauer. don't know about funding though.

hi worried,
academic publications have a strong bias towards things that worked. nobody is going to publish something in a journal that says "I tried this and it didn't work". however, lots of academic work consists of exactly that. and it isn't useless either, as every such try helps devise further research. only nobody ever gets to see it as it isn't published.
i suppose you need to discuss this with your supervisor and you need to abide by your university's and discipline's guidelines, but overall i believe in a PhD thesis it should be ok to write also about the things that didn't work.

PhD workschedule: crazy 24x7 all the time or more manageable?
S

i think this is hard to generalize. it depends on how much else you do than your PhD project, what kind of project it is (lab or field research), the place, previous experience, how fast you work, and within how many years you want to be finished.
from what i've heard, i suppose an average full time student, funded and not doing much else, can manage completion in 3-4 years by working 9-5.
but there are extremes: i have a friend who passed his first year assessment by simply brushing up his original project proposal a bit, which he did within a week. thing is, this guy has been working as a researcher in this field for several years previously. on the other hand, if you need to earn your own money and if you have little previous experience, you will either be working significantly more (overall hours) or your PhD will take longer. which is of course always an option if you want/need to avoid long working hours.

oh, rogue academic, you spell it right out. sometimes i wonder how it is possible at all. especially these days, when everything including relationships seems to be about self-fulfilment.

Am I being over reacting?
S

yes, I would try to make things transparent by talking to people. also, while there might be something fishy in there, it might all be fine, too. perhaps they are all intending to credit your work anyway, in one way or another, and it is actually good news, because you will be made co-author or get another form of reward. so, perhaps the only thing amiss here, is that you weren't yet informed. the only way to find out is by asking!
hope it all turns out fine!

oh annie, so sorry to hear that. sending you lots of virtual hugs.

hey compSci, i do something similar sometimes... i chose two random letters and try to find as many words as possible that start with these two words. like, half, hand, hacker, hang, ... silly and pointless, but works for me!
i think the point of these "counting sheep" methods is to avoid the situation where your mind, which has been occupied all day, is now finally unoccupied and tadaaa... all the successfully suppressed worries emerge. you were tired and nearly falling asleep, but now you are wide awake and worrying about the next day.
so, rather keep your mind occupied with capitals or something until you gently fall asleep

oh yes, i agree with alcohol. but take it easy on this, it is and remains an addictive substance.
uh, sex can help too

oh, and of course there are the things you should avoid:
- coffee... works differently for everyone. in times of stress coffee after midday is taboo for me.
- the same is true for tea, and some infusions, like ginger, mint, and more... these are coffee alternatives, they will keep you similarly awake
- vitamin c, if taken in the evening, will keep you awake. so, no orange juice or fresh fruit before you go to bed!
- same is true for chocolate. cocoa has coffee-like effects.

good luck with re-learning how to sleep!

i've developed a range of strategies. in times of high stress i make a sort of going-to-bed ritual out of some of them.

- hot tea (infusions) 30 minutes before bedtime: lavender, orange flowers, verbena work well for me. you can get special mixtures for relaxation in speciality shops.
- go for a walk 4 hours before bedtime
- lavender in all variations: as an additive in a bath, scented oil on a hot wheat pillow, scented oil in fragrance lights, also as tea
- soft instrumental music that turns itself off... personally i prefer classical piano pieces; or a CD with nature sounds (water, wind)
- before you go to bed, cool down your feet/lower legs, for example by showering them with cold water
- if all that doesn't help, i take valerian tablets
- during my master's final exams, i resorted to "real" medicine. this needs a prescription and is highly addictive, so can't be a long term solution.

Which username on this forum do you like the most?

tricky, mine would be Wunschkind or similar.

i like 404 very much - this is by far the friendliest 404 i've ever encountered, usually you only meet 404s when something doesn't work

Authorship Issues of an article between supervisors
S

hey there,
if you don't care much either way, you could let them just make it up between themselves. you tell them both that you don't care, that you know/suspect the other supervisor wants something, and that they should talk to each other. then you're out of it.
if you DO care, that is, if you don't want the second supervisor's name on it, i guess you could discuss it with your first supervisor, letting him know that you agree with his position and that you would find it hard to talk about it with the other. basically ask him for help in this, and let him know that you can't deal with it alone due to the power imbalance between supervisor/student. so if he doesn't want the other's name on the paper, he has to do something.
just suggestions. good luck with that paper submission!

welcome kate!

woohoo - it is all official!

congratulations! so, are you going to frame that letter and hang it in a special place, or are you going to wait for the official degree certificate?
