i get 14 k and just about do ok money wise. i do live my partner and rent privatl rather than student rental which i guess makes a difference. if you live in shared accom. it would probably make things much easier. although most PhDs have debts to pay off from the student years which eat away at the salary!

i agree designers are a rip off.. but shiny expensive shoes feel so much better than cheaper ones.. maybe im sad!

my advice would be to find institutions that do that type of research or PhD projects and email them your qualifications. it doesnt hurt to send an email to find out.

i wish it was.. free handbags and shoes would make this sooo much easier. free prada would make staring at cells all day so much more worthwhile. tacking 100x of papers whilst surrounded by jimmy choos.. ahhh

a PhD is very different. plus from experience where i work the MPhil takes around 2 years if its based upon the PhD outline (i.e swapping mid way to Mphil) and not how i would recomment you 'try' research. maybe working for a year as a research assistant may be a better way to determine whether it is for you

i was offered a PhD with a high 2.1 and no masters..

try researching the top people in the field/ searching job vacancies to get a feel for qualifications needed i.e on new scientist jobs etc. i would imagine one is needed though.

had a chat with my supervisor today and he was talking about post doc study but said it in suc a way that indicated people never change field from their PhD topic? is this the case? im a little confused as that would restrict my job potential to like 2 or 3 places.

seems a bit off to base their choice on a phone call you were not prepared for. maybe it was just to confirm your interest. i cant see how they could take you out of the running without holoding a formal interview.

did they just ring you out of the blue?

i agree with that it has to be generally accepted if someone gets better offer then they will turn down the previous one. more i just think if yours hearts not set on a Phd (i.e accept it as a backup) until the job offer you want arrives, its not really fair to apply in the first place. not that thats what im saying groovie girlie is saying.. i just mean generally..
