completely lost interest/motivation for my PhD
S

Hey zenzo! I am sorry that you are passing though such a nervous breakdown. But believe me each and everyone and I mean literally each and every PhD holder has passed through this phase during their journey of PhD. This degree is all about patience. Are you able to get help of other lab members or a post doc? It is very rude that your supervisors are not there for you and even discouraging you :( After spending this much time on the PhD do you really want to quit? I have no idea about industrial employment scenario but I know that PhD is not just a degree but it also holds so many things imp in our lives with it. You should definitely see the Postgrad tutor or even a psychiatrist, you may find one on campus. Believe me PhD students see them often. Think about the positive and negative sides of quitting PhD and if you really feel so, you may quit it, but I wish you stay back and fight for just an another year for the degree in which you have invested a lot. Wait a bit longer. This too shall pass.

Good luck

Conceptual framework - please help!!!
S

Hi Jennypenny!

It is good that you are aiming high for your Masters and it is definitely going to benefit you :) Conceptual framework varies across disciplines. For choosing Conceptual framework, I would say, after doing the initial web search (there is an ample amt of useful as well as confusing material on web) you need to read the PhD thesis or Master thesis closely related to your study. Searching past thread in this forum would also help you. Bear in mind that it is not an easy task to select the particular framework but it is very essential as it guides your whole research. Some approaches are stingy and goes well with only particular set of methods and therefore you need to be careful. However as it is for Masters thesis I would not go into too much detail. But if you are going to include particular framework then it is imperative to conceive the idea thoroughly. Some frameworks are the combination of various concepts. For example, in Sociology, if you are studying inequality - you would like to include Bourdieu's concept of Habitués, Marx's conflict theory as well as Freire''s banking concept.

To sum it up it largely depends on what is your discipline and what are you looking at. At this point in my opinion, the best deal is to find out what others have followed and taking up the similar framework that aligns with your central argument. I would also suggest to discuss this in detail with your Supervisor. As he has advised you already I think you are in better position.

Good Luck :)

Hello Everyone!

Hope everyone is moving ahead :)

@ IntoTheSpiral good to have you as well, well that is upto Grumpymule to decide :), but I hope Grumpymule does not mind. But you have really good span to finish up your thesis. I envy you.

@glowworm: Yes I too was stuck somewhere as my other question running on the forum suggests. I have major doubts about my methodology (I wish my supervisor have warned me but he was not helpful to begin with). So I am trying to hook the ends by setting the strong foundations for the methodology. Too bad for me not to achieve my desired goals even today. But I have absolutely no way to go forth without clarification.

My today's goals are(not being too optimistic):
1. To clarify and support my argument & methodology with solid framework
2. In case I have time left, finishing up the paradigm part of methodology

interviews for Capability Approach
S

Hello everyone!

I wonder if anyone here ever employed or have insight about the methodological dilema. To sum it up I would like to know how can I apply Capability Approach to the qualitative interviews I have conducted? My research is in interdisciplinary Social Sciences. I would like to mention that this approach is relatively new and shaping into a holistic approach. it is also open in terms of applications to various disciplines. However, it is generally used in the development and welfare studies. Although the approach is holistic and open the researches conducted so far used mixed methods, here I am afraid how can I defend my qualitative method methodologically, with limited literature available on the methodological application of this approach.

Besides would you worth take the risk to involve in the approach that is purely in its infancy and not easy to conceive?

Hey Grumpymule! It is perhaps a good idea to restart the writing thread. I have to write two important chapters conclusion and introduction in a way and also filling gaps, editing & finalising rest of the chapters. I would like to join as well however I wonder if it would impose more pressure on me as I cant not cop up when I am unable to achieve my deadlines. However I so much want to take part in this thread ;) Besides it would be motivational seeing someone going ahead with work.

My today's quota is,
1. to write down the paradigm I employed in the Methodology
2. Analysis of data in Methodology

So good luck to all of us :)

Interesting Outcome (Supervisor Attraction)
S

Hey! Thanks for clarifying. By reading all your posts i must say that there are so many people who are sharing their perspectives in order to help you. Do not take it lightly or that we do not know what you know. But in both the situations (urs and babygirl's) it is apparent that the person (your supervisor) is manipulative. Manipulators keep playing with your mind and leave you guessing. They also readily opt for your sympathy, like here that his wife passed away. He will deny his feelings and keep sending you the signals that he likes you. Please leave your mind and time for your PhD. A Pshych student? You should be able to figure out early.... All I can say is MOVE ON.

Well lets hear from the OP what is the truth. If it is not the same poster then I would be certainly disappointed seeing two people in this situation :(

PhD itself is a very demanding and nerve wracking journey. By doing such a mess you would not be able to achieve your desired results. We are human beings and not machines. It may sound good in theories 'other things remain constant two people having mutual feelings for each other can work without any problem' simply does not apply here. We are affected by people as well as surroundings. In my opinion you can not work with someone after this much melodramatic situational turns. The only way for you is to move on personally and professionally from this person. Ultimately it is your choice period.

P.S. I like that you changed your username babygirl

UK Tier 4 Visa Refusal on Para 245ZV (k)

HI Gemini!

I am really sorry that you are going through hard time.

Others have already provided helpful tips But from the situation you stated I encountered a few glitches,

1. 'I said no I am not able to get job in India as UK experience is not counted in India and I want a MBA degree from UK which will boost my career further.' - It may implies that if UK experience is not counted that means UK degree may not be accepted in India especially MBAs. I came across a few newspaper articles sometimes back arguing Indian companies are accepting MBAs from UK which takes a year while Indian MBA is of 2 years and include more rigorous coursework. However I do not know what is the contemporary situation.

2. Visa officer may think If UK degree is not counted that means you do not have intention to leave UK after you graduate - Which is an ALERT sign and hence you need to gather all those documents that prove that you will be leaving country after finishing your studies.

3. Further your unemployment for a year in India that too after working in the UK for 4 years also played a part here. In India the culture is different that accepts children to stay with parents. But West requires individual ownership of wealth and income once you are not minor.

In my opinion you need to create your case strongly by stating you will go back and you have solid ties attached to your home country be it a new job waiting, your property, per se. But it would really help if you could show the proof of your father's income. Basically that was what expected when a mail stated to submit required documents. Further you can also take help of reliable agent as there are many agencies that provide advice to students for studying further in the UK. However be careful whom you chose.

Hope it helps. Go ahead and create a stronger case. Fingers crossed for you :)
