Working with Post doc

Somebody I used to get on with has starting blanking me because they've found out I'm studying something in the same field as them (completely different topics though). Some people are very competitive when they find out they're doing similar research to someone else and its their insecurity that causes this behaviour - unfortunately they can't keep their 'issues' to themsleves and so they aim to out you down to make themsleves feel better.

I would try and avoid him at all costs -I know that is easier said them done - but he won't change and the best thing to do is not give him an opporutnity to discuss work with you outside the professional capacity as it will just wind him up and he'll start acting like a child again

I have to look this up every time - my brain has black holes for certain things I can never remember and this is one of them!

How much social time to do have?

What's a social life?

Even if I had the time to go out I don't have the money!

Selling yourself in the covering letter

Pop in a photo of yourself in sexy underwear and sign it 'will do anything it takes...'

My neighbour just went through a D&C and she had a terrible time too - it didn't sound as if the hospital was as sympathetic as it could have been. I understand resources are tight, but they have to appreciate what a traumatic time it is

Will I ever...

...leave a supervision meeting not on the verge of tears??? I always leave depressed and demoralised!

When I was booking my next session with my supervisor he said to e-mail him a few days before to see if it was worth meeting (i.e. if I'd managed to do anything worth discussing). He said that literally five times. I felt like turning to him and saying - I know I won't do it, you know I won't do it, why don't we just be honest and forget this next meeting!

AGRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i am going insane

I think you need to have a serious word with your supervisors at the lack of support you're getting

I usually have about 10 minutes of crying and wailing every month then I'm normal...but then there's still the pain, spots and swollen melons to worry about...

Starting to Write up

If you know what you want to say then go for it - TBH even if you don't know what you want to say I find writing helps focuses my thoughts

Starting to Write up
S

I've started a few weeks ago and already my supervisor wants me to start writing; he says I may not keep all I write now, but its better to start when you can and get things moving

I haven't completed all my research (social science), but I've been told that it's best not to think about your PhD as split between research and writing up because as you write you will identify new areas or new arguments that need to be addressed, which may involve going back and re-assessing your research. Not quite the same with the sciences, but I can still see where it would help you to start writing if you feel you can
