CV - advice needed with detail of results
S

Thats a real shame you didn't get the chance, but again as long as you have an answer.

I suspect if you put the mark in they will probably still ask you - although I would stick with 'the uni did't have a policy on upgrading results and using oral exams' as opposed to saying you did better in the latter half of the year - unless they really ask for details?

Anyway good luck - I personally think you should be allowed the chance to prove you are worthy of a 1st by oral exam when you are that close - its still an exam (performed by examiners from other universities)and if anything a real test of your knowledge as they can ask you anything.

Good luck

Competition Funded Projects
S

I think the thing is that for example 6 PhDs are offered but there is only funding for 4.
The best candidtes for 6 will be accepted then the department will choose the best project or student for the 4, the other 2 PhDs don't get funded and are essentially not available at all (probably until the next year)- as far as I'm aware,

So you would either get it with funding, or not at all - I don't think any of them would expect you to find funding - therefore you don't really need to state that you require funding to accept the post - but you can still discuss the funding with them

Good luck

just as a comment, it will probably help to put down the mark 69% after your 2i

But be prepared to answer questions on why you think you didn't get the first.

I assume (as most employers will)that you would have been given an additional oral exam (as you were so close to the border).

If you did take this oral exam, and still did not get the 1st, you were therefore deemed to desrve the 2i.

I'm not saying this to be harsh, just to point out that if you go in to an interview saying that you 100% deserved a 1st, but lost it only by 1%, expect some questions on this.

At the end of the day you'll face a better chance by putting the result in, but just be ready for some questions - always better to have thought of an answer than stumble on it in an interview.

Good Luck

where are the Cumputing PhDs?
S

Outside of forum and online job applications - most jobs are also placed in the relevant journals (who usually post them online under their)- in science that would be Nature magazine etc -

are there no equivalent journals that you are familiar with, that would run these posts and help your search?

where are the Cumputing PhDs?

Just as a thought, can your previous supervisors/ lecturers not head you in the right direction?

Righto....Lets think of the worst case scenario!!
S

I'd say for a start you NEED to relax - based on what you've said - you are already got a great chance. As they say - the job is yours to loose at this point.

I've had few tricky questions (in 5 interviews)- just make sure you know the basics - Why you want to do a PhD; What you think of the project and how you see your research fitting into it - but i really think you'll be fine.

If this is your first interview, and it depends on their format - In my expereience they wil spend the most time talking about the project so its more important to know the area so you can keep up and stay interested.

If they already know you and your work ethics are good then that will attract them more

Good luck

PhD admission interview. Please help me!
S

I think alovera is pretty much right - they have already pre-qualified you based on your c.v.

now you have to convince them that more than anyone, you are the person for the job

just make sure you are keen, enthusiastic and have some knowledge of their subject area

good luck

BZ26 - good luck with it - Glasgow is an excellent place to live - it is a long time - but you will find a good social culture in the area and I doubt you'll struggle to keep yourself amused in your down time. As for it being far away - you'll have to do that at some point why not do it now? quite a few PhDs in our department come from far far away and are enjoying the experience - If you've got any supervisors in mind let me know and I'll see if I know them to let you know what kind of supervisor they are - we collaborate with a few folk there

ANG - I've just finished up the practical PhD in the department of biochemistry last September looking at Gap junctions etc - just in the final stages of writing up - what about you?

I'm at the Glasgow Caledonian University - which is a different uni - but I did apply for a couple of posts at Glasgow and didn't get any replies from them?

I know a few people who have done degrees, masters and PhDs there and - None of them complain of there experiences

They have some great research going on, and glasgows a great city to live in ;)

happy evening work hours
S

I'm the opposite - need to start first thing 6am

never been able to work effectively past about 7 or 8pm - dunno why?

Cant get an interview!
S

I got a 1st, applied for about 8 positions (not including supervisors I emailed not based on job adverts - then the total is about 40), got 5 interviews and was only offered the one job.

Even with a 1st its hard to get your foot in the door and just as competative - supervisors have to sift through lots of cvs, they go through primary sifts to remove ones that just don't cut it, then a secondary sift which is where your cv comes under greater scrutiny and are left with the few selected for interview. Sometimes you can be missed out if your c.v. doesn't stand out enough - make sure it has something that really says you are the person for the job to grab their attention -

At interview you have already passed their test on the academic side, so its up to you to impress them and convince them you are the one for the job.

Keep at it, it can be a depressing time getting rejected but something will come along if you are determined.

Good Luck
