shocking post-doc salaries
S

my first one starting in the states is just under $40000 - which at the current exchange rate is under £20,000. although they say the cost of living is less -

TBH I'm not that fussed, didn't do it for the money - if it was about money for nothing tho I'd be a train driver with a salary of £40447 for a 37-hour, 4.4-day week

time for yourself?
S

You should have plenty time for normal life most of the time- a PhD is not as all consuming as some would have you belive (in my opinion). A lot depends on you project and supervisors.

You can expect however, at times leading up to deadlines, when you will have to put your personal life on hold. I think this is a fairly common experience among PhD'ers.

Oh and also as a student you get council tax beifits (UK)

no you don't pay tax on the Stipend but you may if you are a research assistant getting paid as staff.
and if anything its easier, because you get more money - the only problem comes if you try to get certain loans based on it, like mortgages

Hey almost there - how goes the writing?

Report Writing - Are figures and tables only bound to an Appendix for a progress report???
S

Agreed, I would say figures and tables should be in the main text where practicable- most of my images are in the text, however most of my tables are in the appendixes because I have a lot of them and they tend to break up the text too much, so its easier to put them all at the end and ref to them

Conference Clothes- what to wear?

I do agree, you never know who you might meet (possible future employers), but I still think that as long as you are well dressed in jeans and not scruffy then its still fine for the day time events - this is just my experience and opinion-
Certainly a lot of the older generation do stick to Khakis and polo shirts etc, or suits but I'd say thats pretty rare (in science, in my experience)
But I agree with Olivia its harder to make a bad impression if you are well dressed

Conference Clothes- what to wear?

For day long or a couple of day conferences I pretty much always go smart
For week long ones, I would just wear what you normally wear, but obviously smart at your poster session and at conference dinners etc.

this might depend on your field, but for science I tend to find most folk just wear normal clothes i.e. jeans and t-shirts during the day

Hope this helps

Basic reference question
S

as a side note, do you use a Ref manager at the moment? I'm sure if you are far along enough but I just wanted to say that EndNote has made my life soooooo much easier and if you don't use that one or another you should consider it

Basic reference question
S

If it really bothers you you could put the reference that you have first followed by something like 'original text - then the reference' in brackets or not. Or you could try find another author who has said the same thing and get their txt

But to be honest as long as you are quoting it from someone that has used and described it, it should be fine, although primary authors are preferable -

At the end of the day if you can't get the ref you can't get it (Oh have you tried google? sometimes you get luck and find it randomly on google unrestricted)

I asked one of the Professors at our Uni if it was a lot harder to write up back in his day and he said no! its a lot harder now because you have too much access, you have to consider everything. back then if they didn't see it, it din't exist!

Just a random ramble

first post here after being accepted!

Congratulations and good luck

There are plenty of threads on here about how to pick the right one, so (as I'm sure you would anyway) take your time and make the right decision - its a long time to spend doing something if you don't like the supervisor or the project.

Good luck and well done
