PM walminski, or do an 'FAO walminski' thread to get his attention, I'm sure he still has the file. :-)

Are PhD standards slipping?
Avatar for sneaks

but the quality of a PhD is not just judged by 'no amendments' 'major/minor amendments' or 'fail', its ALSO based on who the examiners are. If they are the top in your field, you walk away from your viva with the prestige of having had them as examiners, which indicates to other people that your thesis is very good.

You can't say 'standards are slipping' when they vary so much. Standards at my uni haven't slipped, but they are probably different to standards at Wal's uni for example (not saying better or worse, just different).

Its the same as being able to get a undergrad degree from University of Rubbish, and the same titled degree from Oxford. they might be called the same thing, but they probably aren't.

I think the PhD process differs so dramatically across countries, universities, schools and even departments. I know several EU students, for example that didn't have to have a viva!!

And know people who have submitted 1 study which is 12,000 (I would consider a masters dissertation) and got a PhD.

I'm just stupid for not researching this before my PhD, I have to do 3-4 studies at least, and it has to be about 60k words - rubbish!

I really see no point in the thesis though - I think all PhDs should be by publication IMO.

Weird question - Touch up on Graduation photos?!

Weird question - Touch up on Graduation photos?!
Avatar for sneaks

I had the option on my wedding photos, I have no idea actually whether he did it or not, he did 'effects' i.e. black and white, swirly things, but I don't think he touched up me personally. THe only thing he did do was remove all the guests from 1 photo, cos I just wanted a photo of 2 people lol, it looked fab in the end.

I doubt it will look like a 'dodgy photoshop' one and I'm sure if it did you could always demand the original RAW file back.

I always look rubbish in photos, my official graduation one makes me look stupid - my best one is in the gardens outside the cathedral afterwards, taken by my hubby - much more natural!

I'd go for it.

I've thought about it over last night and this morning, and in the shower suddenly decided that he's talking about my sample size (which he mentions in the sentence before) - it is very vague though, not be being stupid. I can't exactly go back and collect more people (it was a major problem to begin with, which I have highlighted throughout the study, as the participant group is very small anyway)

So will not email him.

I will however, keep his email for my method section - there is already a few papers talking about how difficult it is to publish in my research area because of participant numbers :-)

I haven't told my sup yet, I would really like to clarify it first, as if its my stats, then I'd like to think about how to change them first before telling my sup

I've had a rejection from a journal - it didn't go to reviewers, just the editor rejected it. I'm not surprised, its a HUGE journal and I knew there were some limitations for my paper, I mainly sent it in to get some comments on it.

But the comments are really vague, he's said one thing about it, which isn't clear
I'm so tempted to email him (He's a BIG name in the field - US based) to clarify it.

But would you, or is it not the 'done' thing?

I'm sure its fine, they only usually go off to an admin person anyway who will contact you if its all gone wrong! I've only applied to about 4 jobs and have had interviews for all of them (although I htink for 3 of those they invited me for a laugh as was obviously never going to get it, and then they tell me the successful candidate has 3 PhDs and 40 years experience or something), anyway, I think that took ALL of my summer away!

I always forget to save the job description, so have to go to interviews thinking "I *think* this is the xyz jobs!??"

and yes application forms are a nightmare, just had to put my gcse results! I haven't had to get them out for years!

Spent ALL morning re-writing cv and a covering letter for a job, which actually needed an application form, although could copy and paste most of it. Would LOVE this job! eeeep.

Afternoon goal = marking :-(

next = lunch.

Thanks Chuff, the question is now redudant as it turned out to be an application form that didn't allow you to add publications anyway, or attach your cv.

I'm going for a university job, but it isn't an academic post i.e. not a researcher or lecturer, its working in another team - more like an admin/hr function, but it is a really good job and relevant to my skills.

My question is....would you include publications on the cv? I don't think they are necessary for the role, at all, but not sure whether to include!?
