The Apprentice... Anyone watching?
Avatar for sneaks

yeh, after 8 years in education, I wouldn't want someone to just say "oh, you're that freak off that show" when I go to interviews.

I too am awful at selling, problem is I can't be bothered, I'm not motivated by targets or bonuses. If I'd been there when they argued over whose book the sales got written, I'd just say "oh you have it, I don't really care" - which is why I'm rubbish at monopoly. I played it last week with a 6 year old, and told her I was going to donate all my property and money to charity and live in a gypsy caravan - she wasn't impressed.

Advice on whether to apply for job
Avatar for sneaks

yes do apply! I recently didn't apply to a job at Oxford because I thought 'they'll never want me, I'm thick and i've not finished my PhD' - then I spoke to someone from the department who said if I had have applied I would have been the most experienced, furthest along in the PhD AND they were looking for women. D'oh!

All the jobs I've applied for recently, I've had an interview for. And I'm about 6 months off finishing. I've been reserve in 2 of them, so I say it is worth it :D

My tip would be, be vague about your completion date. I just say 'I'm in the final stages of the write up'.

ah, I've not seen 'you're fired' yet - its on my sky+ to watch though.

I think the blue eyes must just be that they shine a special light at them or something in the board room?

I felt a bit sorry for that woman who went a few weeks ago, who hadn't done anything really. I find it very odd how he seems to just want people who are balshy and can sell - but would you really want to work for someone like that in a team? and how much selling is really necessary? surely Amstrad have a selling division, sure, but they must have a lot of non-selling roles?

I think the surgeon made a good point too - its all very well technically winning a task on one week, but in 'real business' you'd have to prove repeat business and build up an image, which is never really covered on the show.

Hope either 'big eyes' (she really does have HUGE eyes) or 'fat toddler boy' (stuart?) go next week.

yeah, not my family though, well in laws. I really need to go home and do this work :-( I've just done a better plan for the overall paper though.

I'm trying to rack my brains of things i could get on with, but can't think of anything!

haha, that girl was a right idiot! I think I'm getting old cos me and hubs both agreed that as most of them were under 25 they 'will know nothing' lol (I'm only 26!). I don't understand how someone can have that much misplaced confidence! "I'm great at pitching" - no you're not.

I hope 'big eyes' goes next week, I think blondie might win it (girl whose obviously some city expert) but I like the goofy hunched one - sorry don't know any of their names.

I miss margaret too, she went to finish her PhD, maybe she's on here! *waves at Margaret*

Can you imagine having nick as your external!?

Well I've managed to get a very rough idea of what I want to say in my paragraph, but I'm trying to work in the middle of a house that has 4 other adults and a 6 year old, plus a cleaner hoovering around me - not done much today! :-(

stand aside, let the resident computer expert through (stop laughing!)

erm...I think you can use a keyboard, if you have the ports that fit the wire somewhere - 'modern' keyboards use usb anyway I think (?)

If you had your old (big) laptop with the printer and everything linked up, you could print through a network link. - might wake the baby though?

Maybe put the baby in the hall?

thats rubbish star shaped. Although I didn't show my supervisor my applications at all for jobs, it meant I could 'big up' some of the smaller projects I'd worked on without her saying "now now, your role was smaller than that" lol.

I've wasted most of summer applying to jobs and attending interviews - it takes SO much work, and they mainly go to internal candidates. Its defnitely worth tailoring each application though rather than sending the same thing off to everyone.

still don't know what I'm doing. But I MUST sort this out today - I think its something that has the potential to drag on for weeks stopping me doing anything else!

Fork in the road. Any advice?

I think I'm going through the same thing. I'm not so worried about the publications - I am getting some out though - more about the future as an academic given the recent announcements of fees and cuts etc. I'm not sure I want to be spoon feeding 17 year olds their degrees because they pay £12k a year, and I don't want to be sponsored by McDonalds - yet still being paid worse than anyone I know!

My plan is... get the PhD, publish the PhD studies, look around for what's out there, if I get a job in industry, I have the publications so I have a time limit of about 1-2 years to definitely make up my mind about which path to take. This is probably a little easier in my field, where practical experience in the workplace is valued. So I will have 1-2 years to decide whether to stay/go back into academia or get on with something else.

THe amoutn of work that is necessary as a lecturer though, it just seems so unappealing in terms of salary.
