my husband is a civil servant so I know its very small :-( rubbish. unfortunately he likes flexible working so won't go to a private sector company and for every company I've suggested he's decided that "everyone who works there are tw@s". I can't blame him really.

Stats question: log-transformations

ooh, I guess so. Tbh, I've been using bootstrapping recently, rather than transform, you can get it on SPSS 18.

erm not sure 'paid like public servants' is really accurate - how about, paid less than my friends who work at dixons - now that is a horrible thing to admit. But all those degrees and years of never having weekends off have been worth it because....erm......

Sorry ETA: I don't have friends at dixons, just acquaintances - just to make that clear

I recommend...

There is no way I'm putting on the heating until december - and then hopefully I'll go to my parents for xmas and use their heating. So I have fingerless gloves (with mitten bits that button back for extra warmth when not typing), a hat thing with ear flap bits - the kind of one tree protestors wear lol, and I have many big chunky knit cardies which go over my other clothes - also got ugg-like slippers (they are actually slippers, not uggs) to wear with thick socks.

I recommend buying a fluffy dog, my dog is not really fluffy enough to be warm - should have got a dulux dog.

I always think that you should transform everything, if you are transforming one variable - if you are using it in the same analysis.

any tips?

thanks for the advice. I'm just trying to think of what skills I've got lol. Not many! I'm thinking of just talking about the things I feel were glossed over in my last 2 interviews (where I was unsuccessful at different unis) to make sure I really hammer them home.

Luckily I did my undergrad at the uni in a different department, but my hubs is doing a PhD in the same department, (although in a slightly different area so they probably won't know him) and I have friends there so have been able to get a little bit of background from them. From this, I know they're very concerned about the REF, so I want to make sure I put a slide up about how Iwill contribute to that (hoping other PhDers may forget this)

any tips?

Well my plan so far is..

Slide one (after title etc.) is overview of me e.g. brief career history
Slide 2-5 = research, 2 slides for PhD, and 2 for other projects (Which I've seen are related to theirs)
Slide 6= what research skills I have from these experiences (e.g. qualitative, quantitative etc etc)
Slide 7 = publications - and dates so they go in for the next REF(need to fnd this all out!)
Slide 8 = teaching experience
SLide 9 = what teaching skills i have gained and what my style is e.g. talk about learning styles here..
slide 10 = consultancy work.

Finish?

Or maybe I should start off with teaching, as my research side is stronger and my publications are looking good - so I could end on a high point, rather than a 'erm..so'

Got an interview

ooh congratulations! I have no idea what's best, although if it allows you more time to the do PhD - therefore getting teh PhD done sooner, it may be better in the long run as it allows you to be qualified and then go for better full-time jobs sooner?

I don't get the interest payment - it seems like if you earn tons of cash e.g. over 100k, then you can pay it off really quickly, but for most people they'll have thousands of pounds of interest added to the original debt, so the people who do well in their degrees, get an average to well-paid job, actually end up worse off. Confused.

I've just read that it may come in as soon as 2012, which is a shame because my 21 year old sister in law, has just had a baby and wanted to go to university in a year or so. I very much doubt whether she will want to now.

Is there anyone who agrees with any of it apart from Lord Browne?

any tips?
Avatar for sneaks

I've just awarded you a star :-)

I guess I'm having trouble with a) do I do it about my PhD - which takes a good 10 mins to explain the 3 studies. or b) do i very breifly explain the studies, but concentrate on ALL the research I've done? e.g. my RA position was looking at something they have a lot of interest in etc etc and also teaching (I got the impression from the ad, they wanted more teaching than research).

My problem is I don't want to be all "oh I'm SOOOOO great at this...."

any tips?

I have to do a presentation for a job (as well as an interview) - Its supposed to be about how I can impact research and teaching at university X.

Its 15 mins long.

I don't know what to put in it

*cry*

In every report I've seen on this, they are trying to make out like students are different to graduates i.e. trying to say they AREN'T the same people!

is it true that the fees will be based on subject? and that the interest on the loans will differ depending on how well you did or something?

I've just read the bbc overview - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11519642 OMFG. I'm going to have to start saving for my non-existent child NOW! Or move to scotland. (but there are midges!)

I see they've slided in the 'university lecturers will have to have teaching qualifications' bit - i.e. lecturers are now customer service providers - make sure you don't give anyone a low mark, they're paying £12k remember!
