So embarrassed - what to do!
Avatar for sneaks

As I was reading that I was expecting the end to say "and the number was my supervisor's/boss'" or similar.

I don't think you need to worry - maybe text an apology and leave it at that.

normally I would say yes. But I'm doing this whole intro as a theory x vs theory y (in a battle to the death (from boredom) ) So I would need to put both hypotheses. This is all supervisors crazy idea, so don't blame me! :-)

I guess are you saying I should go with one-tailed, and then if it wasn't significant (which it is) then it would support the other hypothesis?

I have 2 hypotheses for the same thing. I'm basically testing two theories.

H1: there will be no difference between 2 groups - they will both do the same thing
H2: there will be a difference.

Now I'm testing this with a t-test.

My question is...(drumroll)........

Do I divide the P values by 2 (i.e. one-tailed) or leave them as they were (two-tailed)??????????????????????????????????????

£112 million - what would you do?

You're all sickeningly generous!

I might get a personal chef, and a personal trainer to work off all the butter and cream that the chef would have to put in everything (if its anything like Saturday Kitchen anyway)

Trapped in PhD. I wish I could quit.

I think you need to sit down and work out why you don't want to do the PhD. Separeate being 'dumb' from other reasons such as being uninterested in the project (?) etc. Then you can go to your supervisor with your concerns. If it is just that you feel your not up to the task, then that is perfectly normal (I still feel like that and I'm starting my 4th year).

Bilbo is right, a year on the CV is easy to explain away - the general 'researcher' role is quite useful here. You could also consider doing an MPhil and write up what you have already - thereby getting a qualification.

I would also have a long think about whether you do want to quit. Many people feel overwhelmed in the first year and feel inadequate, I know I did. And don't compare your understanding to a post doc's.

You are not too dumb to do a PhD, otherwise, even after an informal interview, your sup would have known it. Seems like you may have a bout of imposter syndrome

is Word throwing up a spelling/grammar error, I know this is unlikely with numbers, but it won't let me select 'edit citation' if its over a spelling mistake (well if Word thinks the name isn't a word).

Am I the only person who wonders...
Avatar for sneaks

Agree in general, although if you mean people who ask on here about PhDs, then you could take that as being research in itself (?)

you should be able to right click on the [number] and then select 'edit citation' from the menu. Then you get a little box that comes up. Then you should be able to highlight the references/citations you want to remove and press 'remove' (funnily enough) and then ok, and then they will be removed from everything (citation and refs)

I've been beaten to it!

I would say put them in the discussion. IF they really are sayting the same thing as your studies, then putting them in BEFORE the studies, makes the studies superfluous i.e. if I were an examiner I would say "so why do them!?"

Putting them in the discussion highlights the fact that these were published AFTER you did your research too and it would give you a nice little discussion section where you could compare your findings (and perhaps highlight why your setting is better e.g. better participants, situation etc).

urgh, so I had lunch, came back raring to go and have had an email meaning I had to do another hour of non-PhD work :-s

Will now try and look at the paper - I really cannot bare it :-(

ETA: should it be bear or bare? I don't want to 'bare' anything, so don't worry.

hmm I'm quite jealous of undergrads too, although maybe not if they raise the fees.

I haven't done my work goal, instead I did some non-PhD work that is due for wednesday (but my supervisor will hate me doing). So going to have a late lunch and then get on with my PhD work.

I really want an amazon kindle. My hubby laughed at me, but really that is one of the firs things I'd get. I also need a new jumper. Oh and some new trainers - I've worn the same ones for about 5 years now and they are really falling apart :-(

So Euro millions is £112 million this Friday.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but its monday, gloomy outside and I'm annoyed with my work, so..

what would you spend it on?

I know one of my purchases would be offering a research grant to my supervisor, but then asking her to re-write her proposal 40 times before I'd let her have it. mwahahahaha.

I'd say 5pm on that day is acceptable Ev ;-)

I've had a rubbish morning. I had to sleep in a different bed last night as hubbys got a cold and the snoring!!!! OMG! - so felt all weird when I woke up. Trudged around a very very very muddy field with the dog for an hour and felt like death, I think I've got hubbys thing as getting all hot and cold. I then had to go to buy the weekly shop and get stuff from pets at home - which took AGES. Just come back put all the shopping away, and now need to get on with work.

Meanwhile my sup has emailed me my paper back - with changes that haven't been tracked, so it will take me hours to work out what she's changed and has said "I'll work on it some more today and email it later" - then why email me any version now!??? what's the point if she's going to change it anyway GRRRRR.

Goal 1: find PIN code thingy so hubby can check his bank account and pay off all our debts
Goal 2: decide what to do about the stupid hypotheses as sup obviously is not going to help me in anyway on this one :-(
