Any tips on getting back to work after months of PhD inactivity?
Avatar for sneaks

My hubs is in the same situation. I guess I'm the one who makes him sit down and do it. But we always have goals e.g. we'll proof read chapter 5 on saturday. He's so tired and values his weekends so we try and make sure its a short quick burst of concentrated work e.g. 2-3 hours so he can relax for the rest of the weekend.

Can I assume there will be a projector?

I'd email to check. I went to do a talk to a stakeholder group and was assured there'd be powerpoint, and when I turned up they said they had the tv screen but 'couldn't be bothered' to set it up - so I ended up having to read off my slides and hold up my only hand out to the group to show them points on a graph! Luckily it was only about 15 people, but I was still really peeed off with the organsiers.

right I've put my hubs in front of the cricket, he seems like he will be settled for a few hours :p He has the week off work this week, so I need for him to realise I can't sit next to him ALL week watching films.

Goal 1: Run ANCOVA and write up.

Manifestations of stress...

I definitely think you should go to the docs.

I do find that I have weeks where I can't get to sleep - everything I think about leads me back to my PhD and stressing over it. I find I lie there stressing for hours as hubs snores away next to me 8-) I bought a sound asleep pillow though and listen to audio books now at night to take my mind off it.

I think most jobs its 'who you know' so do you know anyone who knows someone who's a journalist? to get some work experience?

Alternatively try and get some work experience by going in stealthily i.e. getting a non-journalist job at the newspaper/website. I know for example that a very famous journalist sits on my hubbys football forum, so if you supported the same team he'd probably find you some experience (not actually saying you should do that, but its an example of how you could get 'in').

You could also start a blog - while they can be a bit lame, it also demonstrates your writing ability. I'll try and find the blog that I sometimes read, I know the lady that writes it has been offered paid writing work off the back of it.

Yes, but the translated tool did a bad work.;-)

ah ok, if its in American then I won't understand it, maybe try translating it into 'English'.

well I've found abook which explains all the stats I need to know - but it explains it in crazy equations, so will have to wait for hubs to help me through it.

In the meantime I'm going to hoover - so I don't have to tomorrow :-)

Any AMOS experts - SEM?

thanks Charls!

Any AMOS experts - SEM?

:-( I found one book, but can't see all the pages.

If I dummy code it though, how will I understand the moderation? Usually I would create an interaction term e.g. IV x moderator. and if the interaction was significant then I would say there's a moderation .

Would you create two interaction terms (for both dummy variables - assuming the categorical moderator has 3 levels)?

Well I'm now not sure if I even need AMOS. I'm so confused!

I basically want to do a moderating regression - fine. But my moderator is categorical, with 3 categories.

So I was going to regress it on to the outcome separately for each group and then compare the coefficients. but then I find that if the measurement errors for the predictor are different for each group (which they are), then I shouldn't do this and I should use SEM.

Now I'm stuck :-(

well I'm struggling this morning. My cat woke me up at 11pm (well I was reading), 3am and 5am to bring me different mice :-( he meeows around the house to tell you he's got 'a present' and won't stop until you go and get the blimmin thing, and at that point, the cat decides he wants to keep it and we play chase around the sofa/kitchen/hallway until I trick him with food and bag the mouse. :-s

So I'm tired. But I'm also trying to work out HOW to run my stats. The stats lecturer has left for the summer, my sup wouldn't know what SPSS is and there is no one I can ask :-( I've been trawling google for 2 hours now for an answer!

Publishing: Book v. Journal Papers
Avatar for sneaks

If it were me I would publish journal articles. If you want to move into academia later, they are far more useful than a book. I've been told to stay away from books because they don't count for the REF and take a lot more time (in my area anyway).

I'd just start looking at the kind of journals you could publish in (often by looking at where your references are from - there may be a lot from the same journal). Look at the style etc. and have a go yourself.
