I've done 33 mins on my bike, apparently 8.75KM and 145 Kcals. I then went for a short 20 min dog walk because its raining and my dog decided to flush a bird out of a hedge, and as it flew out past her, she flipped round and killed it (turkey) - so that's animal number 4 that my pets have dispatched this week (to my knowledge) and it put me off walking her for much longer.

I've decided to build up my time on the bike to 50 mins, do that for a week or so and then go back to 30 mins but on a harder resistence.

Well I think I'm giving up for today. I've done a lot of thinking about my work -which was very necessary and done quite a bit, so feeling in a good place to get on with things tomorrow.

haha, she's ginger if that helps. I would post a pic, but would feel guilty as I guess that's her property (although she does like to splash them across facebook enough)

Interview presentation: big deal!
Avatar for sneaks

I guess they may be assessing you on teaching/presentation skills at the same time, rather than just being interested. If you've had to go to those higher education teaching things, they really go on about different types of learning i.e. some students learn by watching vids, some through group work etc etc. If you just talk, they might worry that you'll not have a wide range of teaching techniques - if that makes sense!

like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCq4J9frJhk

Maybe not as graphicy! and you would need more info e.g. what your jobs were, what skills you had etc.

Personally I would prefer to have a powerpoint there for back up - i.e. if you lose it, having something there to refer to is great and keeps you from waffling.

If it were me, I would probably try and make it quite humourous i.e. chuck in a few photos of your graduation party or something, but it really does depend on your audience - it could either make you very memorable or make you seem like you're not taking the role seriously.

Or you could do a power point that was one slide with a long animation of a career timeline, so every time you click the mouse a new thing comes up on your career timeline that you can talk around

ooh I love fred astaire!

I have a dolce gusto coffee machine on my desk and I have coffee syrup - really bad idea if you don't want to be off your head on caffeine and sugar all day! But yes the gingerbread one is MMMMMMM.

PhD Skills

Quote From goodboy:

Sneaks! The best strategy is to think carefully about what have you learnt after your PhD experience rather then going for fancy, strong words which even someone with a 3rd will have on their CVs. A short personal statement etc...

erm....procrastination?

PhD Skills

Thanks Ev, what do you think would come under each heading?

I want my CV to be understandable to thickos basically, so really need to spell it out. i.e. not 'research skills' but 'research skills, including.....blah blah'

PhD Skills

Ok I put together my CV last week and spurred on by the thread on PhD identity, I want to have some more things to put on it!

Specifically I want to put down what skills my PhD has given me - particularly transferrable skills (i.e. not so much that I have learnt about a specific technique).

So far I have things like presentation skills, written/verbal communication...

Any others????

Lol Sneaks, its funny you say that, my friend also posts endless photos of herself on facebook and is kind of matching your description.... hmmmm..... lol lol - but she does really enjoy it!

ooh maybe its the same person, or maybe its a kind of disease. Maybe in 2 months I'll be PMing you all with links to photobucket of me hanging off a pole upside down with some knickers that appear too tight and are therefore showing muffin top (and bottom) (snowman)

omg, my friend does pole dancing and obviously thinks shes very good at it. She puts up photos on facebook ALL the time. She's not the most elegent of people and although she must be quite fit, to me looks short and fat with a piggy face (sorry but she really does). I really want to shout "put it away" but I guess that's rude. She obviously feels the need to show people, maybe its a self-esteem thing?

watching you tube vids of dramatic animals cheer me up - like Wal's post in the sticky thread on the office pet.

PhD identity - and what else?
Avatar for sneaks

I guess I'm feeling the pinch at the mo. Me and hubby can just about afford our mortgage if we both earn about £26k. So if I can't get a job then we may have to sell up. My friends who went on to consultancy work in my field after the masters are now on about £40k each, and it is annoying that my skills just aren't valued in that world.

I don't live in London, but if I commute, it costs me £6k per year, so have to get a job £6k above what I need in order to be able to justify it - and I can't get that with the PhD, experience would be better. So I look at local jobs, there is no huge industry here, only very small companies, with 2 or 3 people per office and they just want admin people.

I had set my heart on the civil service - where hubby works. But they've just announced the recruitment freeze, so not feeling overly optimistic.
