at the beginnning of a presentation - that's a seminar presentation to 'important' people? - I feel a bit silly saying "this is what I'm going to talk about" rather than just talking about it.

My Sup treates her postdocs as RAs - in that they do some admin for her and work on bits and bobs from different projects, but are primarily responsible for 1. As a PhD student, she never gets me to do anything unless she pays me as an 'associate consultant' or if its related to my PhD - but for my PhD I am technically working on about 5 projects at the same time.

I wouldn't have thought its dodgy or illegal to ask a post doc to work on more than one - assuming they will get some form of publication and a range of skills from each of the projects its probably quite a good thing. Terminating their contracts a bit harsh though, unless they are underperforming

Right, I've decided that I need to concentrate on the marking so I've got 20 to mark. I will mark 10 now and 10 tomorrow. So...


Goal 1: mark 10 essays
Goal 2: Put together backup presentation for tomorrow
Goal 3: clean up some analyses?? - don't think I'll get this done :-(

I'm thinking of applying for the civil service fast stream after I do my PhD - it takes at least 6 months! So I'm thinking of getting a civil service job and then applying internally - at least I would have an income then, not just waiting around to be rejected!

haah Algae - I was on a committee like that. I was on it for 3 years, in the final one I chaired it and in that year, our usual 5 hour meetings were cut to 30mins, I HATE meetings and see no point in sitting around if everything can be decided relatively quickly. I also ended up doing most of the stuff myself because I'm a control freak. Thankfully I stepped down this year for my write up.

Anyways. Todays goals are...

Goal 1: to finish the marking on Q1 of essays by lunchtime
Goal 2: clean up half my analysis data
Goal 3: To prepare a presentation for tomorrow that I probably won't have to give, but just in case the other person doesn't turn up :-s

totally agree - but as I'm not the course leader, just a lowly PhD student, I have no sway. So far I have 58, 72 and 75. Off to mark the rest today!

Could he already be in a relationship? I'd play it cool - maybe try and arrange a date and if he can't be bothered, leave it at that and move on. If he can, then use it as a chance to discuss what exactly he's been so busy doing.

I've got the marking grid. At the mo I'm going through, writing all the comments, filling in the grid and then leaving a post-it note for the final mark. I tend to be quite a harsh marker, which I've been pulled up on (not badly) before, so am really trying to give higher marks. I did fail someone last year - it was the WORST essay ever and I gave it to 3 other people and they agreed, but my course leader didn't want to fail anyone so put it up - I'm now paranoid of marking anyone under 60!

They must have quite a few references for the reliability/validity side of things?

I don't know anything else - I'd say a half hour trawl through google scholar :-(

How about the publishers? phone or website - if you wanted to buy it I bet they'd give you tons of info on that stuff.

I think its GL assessment? Could be wrong.
