I had a friend who said that apaprently, some people just have the right personalities to be all round superstars. The kind of women who get up at 5am, go to the gym for an hour, come home, get the kids to school, then do a full days worth of work (where they excel), then come home, walk the dog, bake some cookies, cook a lovely home made meal, play with kids etc. etc. and don't feel knackered. If I did half of that, I'd sleep for a week!

I'd like to hear from people who have Ipads. I'm coming up against quite a major problem at the moment - after 4 years of using a laptop like an extra arm, I can't write with a pen anymore! well at least not very neatly.

I'm running seminars where I need to tkae notes of peoples presentations/performance and at the mo, I'm having to go back and write them all up - wasting valuable time.

I wonder if an ipad or something (?? suggestions please!?) would be able to let me read papers and do this kind of note writing, or is it best to just lug around a laptop?

(sorrty for crashing thread) - if people can do this on kindle I'd also like to know!

I think the specific fast streams e.g. HR, statistics, GORS, have different dates throughout the year. Probably worth checking, as well as the civil service recruitment gateway.

I'm working on my PhD today. I have 17000 words of lit review, I want to reduce that to at most 14,000 really - would be nice to get it less, but I think even that is going to be a major struggle.

Good luck with the task Eska. I've done 3 lectures in the last 3 weeks, which I thought would only last 25 mins and they last the full hour when you actually have to explain things to a sea of confused looking faces!

ooh actually walminski has some great ideas. have you thought about organsiations such as MORI, or the yougov people? - they always need someone whose handy with a survey.

My hubster's workplace also takes on Drs in all kinds of disciplines, but need people who can do stats PM me if you want details, they're london based.

Also think of civil service fast streams - there is a recruitment freeze in place at the mo on civil service work, but this does NOT include the fast stream, so it will be competitve but worth a shot!

You can send pdfs to kindle and they send them back (within a day or something - its very quick), in Kindle format. I've not tried this for academic stuff, but it may well be a solution to having to scroll around a pdf.

I prefer to have my kindle as a lovely thing that I enjoy, rather than being yet another thing that has been tainted by my PhD lol I therefore prefer to read teenage vampire fiction on it and never soil it with horrible academic work :p

I'd think about marking too - we seem to have tons of stuff that needs marking with no one to do it around my uni!

Also - think about lurking around unis with pregnant people -they'll be taking their mat leave sooner or later and if you're there, then you'll be the obvious cover choice :p

I've been absent of late. I started my new job and its hectic to say the least. I have A LOT of work to do for it, and have work to finish from my old job AND have to submit by the end of NOv. so LOTS OF PRESSURE.

I'm going to go home now, but I'll log on tomorrow to get some PhD done, even if its just an hour or two!

Well, I think I'm pretty dumb really. I've just been in the right place at the right time. I have enough effort to get writing done, but generally I'm quite lazy.

I went into doing this because of some unknown pressure from somewhere that said 'otherwise you'll have to work in a shop' - but I wished at some point, I'd stopped to ask myself 'what's wrong with that', because I now see people living much happier, settled lives than I do. I kind of long for a life where I could stop thinking about work at 5pm.

in my field - if a company has done the research, it usually means that the quality isn't that good e.g. they didn't control for things, seemed to skew the results for management's objectives or didn't interview enough people etc etc etc

I'm not intimidated by these people - they may be shiny on the outside, but they probably cry into their soup at night because they have no soul.

I know someone who is an all round perfect person - looks, grades, slim, great career, earns loads and on the face of it is very nice too. I like to think she's crap at DIY, or has no common sense, or perhaps is a psychopath - makes me feel better
