I had a rubbish day yesterday. I finished 1 analysis, and spent the whole day reading my true blood book. I'm really tired from the weekend and when I'm sluggish, I just cannot work. But I must! Today's goal, same as yesterday :-(

Can dating and postgraduate studying ever really mix properly?!

Aw 4matt :-( My husband doesn't have any status (apart from being my husband - which is obviously a saught after position ;-) ), no money at all - I spent it all. he does have good looks, but its not why I married him. Have faith, women aren't all that shallow, maybe just the ones you have your eye on :p

How has your PhD changed you?

Wow - Deep Goodboy!

I haven't cleaned my house for about 6 months - does that count?

haha, I had a huge argument with my daily mail reading mother in law over trident. She said that "we need something to defend ourselves as an island" - I'm not sure who/what she thought was going to invade - perhaps an army of basking sharks? I consulted my dad on the matter who is abit of a history buff and he said the last time we had actually been invaded was like the Vikings or something (he said something different, but I'd tuned out - it was definitely a good long time ago though).

She also used that family of 14 or whatever, who live off benefits as an argument against 'loony liberal lefties' and the benefit system. So I 'baffled' her with stats speak and told her that if you had a normal distribution this family would fall pretty much in the extremes of that distribution and therefore you shouldn't  base your opinions on them haha!

My mother in law is also running for conservative councillor, but can't even be arsed to turn up for the result! Can you imagine if you had voted for her and she couldn't be bothered to see if she'd won! :-(

I'm LD btw - my loony left wing parents brought me up that way and I think cameron is just plain creepy and i reckon there's an evil puppet master behind the tories that we won't see until later *shudders*

For those of you who did/are doing a Masters

Having done organisational research for my PhD and had to get interviewees and quetionnaire participants, I feel your pain. Its always good to have a back up plan. Organisations very often get iffy about the most harmless research and may suddenly pull out. So its good to have a second org lined up, or people who work in similar organisations etc. 8 particpants isn't hard to find - you could even go to somewhere like mumsnet and ask people to participate e.g. "any of you work in organsiations like xyz?" - just a thought!

Right, well yesterday was a complete waste of time. I had to go to my mother in law's annual bbq - where there were about 200 people, at least 40 kids. She had cornered us into going by inviting our friends without checking with us, so we were forced to stand there all day. So I didn't get any work done, didn't get anything to eat (because they stopped cooking stuff when we got there at 12!????) and got back really late so am now really tired :-s

I also found my mobile which has a missed call from Friday from my sup. Now I'm not sure whether to confront this and phone her, or ignore it and wait for her to remember me, in the mean time getting the work done that I tolder had been done months ago. Think I will opt for the 2nd choice!

So goal today

Get the analyses done! ARRRGH I have about 10 to do, it will take me all day to do about 3 I think, so must press on!

Until you mentioned he lived 120 miles away I was thinking about a stable boy haha! Seriously though I think relationships are totally doable. I got married in my 2nd year PhD. However, new relationships probably do need a bit more maintenance, especially if the other half isn't academic. I guess the best thing to do would be to have a serious chat about expectations. You never know, it may suit him REALLY well to only see you on sat/sun afternoons for a few years. If not he can decide for himself if you give him the option.

I don't think you should give up your life for academic work, just be aware that both sides will need work at different times. There have been whole weeks where I've had to stop study to 'work' on my marriage i.e. go out with hubs to town/cinema etc (so difficult! :p ) I spent the last 2 days working on his thesis with him for example. My thinking is that it would be better to finish my PhD, maybe a month or so later with a great husband, than right on time with a grumpy one!

oh no KB! Please feel able to post about man issues - getting them straight is often crucial to PhD success! At least feel able to PM us all! (up)

@ Sneaks - why can't you use your Dr title unless your husband completes his PhD? seems a bit harsh!

Just because it will always remind him that he didn't finish, and I wouldn't want to rub salt in the wounds as it were.
