I'm doing a similar PhD - it was already decided what the studies were going to be. I was going to replicate another PhD, but with a different sample essentially. However, when I started I realised that there were so many other issues for this new sample and now the PhD has completely changed. There is 1 study that resembles the original, but even that is different.

I'd take a step back. Imagine explaining the area to your mum or someone who doesn't know anything about the field. Try to explain in terms of what's been done, what hasn't. Don't go thinking a PhD has to be groundbreaking research. In fact most PhDs are just baby steps.

My spinal surgeon said under no circumstances should I jog and that it was generally the worse thing you can do for your joints etc. However, its hard to find another activity that lets you exercise without gym membership or paying for swimming etc. At the mo I'm sticking to my home exercise bike and wii fit.

I would do the marathon if I could be bothered, but not for charity, just for the sake of getting myself fit. I can't stand people who are always annoying me for race for life etc etc. if I want to give to the charity I will do!

Then put across your 'number' variable to the right hand box. Then Click the symbol ~= then the number, then the & sign so...

Number ~= 2 & Number ~= 5 & Number ~= 7

Then run it - you should have excluded analysis on 2, 5 and 7.

Have you numbered the cases in their own column - i.e. do you have a column called "caseNo" or similar? If so you should then be able to select cases. I assume you can't at the mo, because you are just using them how they are numbered in SPSS (without defining them in your own column)

WOO i've finally finished that annoying analysis. Problem is I have to walk the dog, before going to mother in law's so don't think i will have a chance to do much else today. hmph.

I'm struggling with my analysis, I'm doing one - I think the lady just phrases thigns wierdly because I can't code it correctly. Rather than talking about herself she talks in hypothetical examples but is really referring to her - stupid woman!

I think the EU card is an easy one to play for the Tories, most people feel 'bossed about' but don't see the benefits. My dads business couldn't survive without good relations with the EU.

I have had a slow start, got a bit of a headache, although taken antihistamine (for hayfever) and neurofen, but its still not budging. THinking maybe its sugar addiction, which is pretty bad!

I have to go to my mother in law's house today because she wants me to move a bookcase :-s - that's £30 in petrol and 2 hours driving (down)
But I'm going to try and get a load of stuff done beforehand,just plugging away with the analyses.

I'm going to go with mytomatoes today and my radio up high to try and keep at it.

Well I'm defintely voting lib dem. there are a few who think they are too idealistic, but I actually think we need that. What's wrong with AIMING for renewable energy? even if we have to back it up with burning tory MPs for fuel??

They obviously tried to attack him on nuclear arms, which as far as I can see is the LD chink their armour - it worries certain people. Not me I have to say, because my cousin works in a nuclear submarine - he is mental and all 'tim nice but dim' and he's pretty much said that its a waste of money.

It also dawned on me last night that whatever party gets in, they are the ones going to be setting up what I get as a parent, if I choose to have a child in the next 5 years which is very probable. When I realised that, and understood that I shouldn't just vote for what is best for youngish PhD students :p the Tory party seem way off the mark. I don't like their DIY britain view, i totally agree with this http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/apr/14/election-2010-conservatives-big-society - I want professionals doing professoinal jobs, not some netmums wanna be running a school!

I've actually decided not to do anything tonight. I've had a few too many days of sitting aruond all day doing 1 or 2 things. I think I need a clean break, then start afresh tomorrow (after a bit of sleep!)

Wow Amanda, you've done loads. I've had a nap :p :$ I remembered that I went to bed at 1am last night and got up at 6am which is why I'm so sleepy - not because I was up partying away, my husband needed a lift from the station after work drinks :-s So i've pretty much wasted today. I do feel a lot better after the nap though!

I want to finish off the analysis I'm half way through and then do another full one before tonight, which will be tricky because I really want to watch the leaders debate.

Oh well I will try!

whoah - well I have a load of analyses to be doing, but IF I find a spare moment I will have a look at 3 max.
